I have two of the full wraps with those extinct but intact flat AV mounts. Both on the 81s. I just did a comp test on the nicer 81. It was blowing 215psi before I quit. I didn't want to break the recoil just to make a point.

My original question was referring to the 90s REAR handle and my observation that the lower section is plastic and not mag like my 80 and 81s. The real question about full wraps is why they don't show up in any of my IPLs.

On the 80 at least, the rear handle was mag based with a plastic fin on one side of the bottom...so the saw was stable when you put it down. However, because the saws are so old and the plastic pieces are often broken, whatever fit was put back. I have the original fin on my 80, but I had to take it off because one of the holes was wallowed out. So now, it has another plastic piece from some other Jonsereds...but it ain't exactly correct. I just gave up on finding a worthy original. The saw needs something when you set it down.

You can tell if you have the correct one or not, because the bolts are really long but hidden. Looking at your saw, those bolt tails stick out...that indicates to me, that the bottom handle piece is not the correct one that came with the saw. Supposed to look more like your 81...although I have no experience with that particular model(81) or how clone it is to others in the line. And yes, that's exactly the flat AV mount I was talking about on your 81....you'll most likely never find another. Maybe some old saw shop going outa business with a box of Jon parts etc.

If it keeps coming loose, try some carb cleaner and a few hundred bb's. Shake well, rinse, repeat. That grey crap is some nasty stuff once it starts to flake.

It was pretty wretched. Been yrs since I've seen it in there, so i assume it's mostly gone. Must have been some sort of factory sealant then? I split a Husky mag tank and re-epoxied it once. Worked for about a yr. Never doing that again, let me tell ya. Just find another tank. It was actually my fault, although the original tanks do tend to leak. I was cleaning things up and stuck a compressed air nozzle in the oil tank and heard the tank seam 'pop'. "Oh sh##!" moment for sure....:msp_razz:

For the most part this is what the 90 looked like new...most of them.Model Profile: 90

Notice the mag bottom and the plastic fin much like your 81. I can't find anything on your 81....was it just another variant of the 80....how is it different?

Kevin

The consensus on the 81 is it's a western version of the 801. Full wrap and a large spike (which I have and would love to duplicate.) Not a factory model, but whoever did it took the time to create a decal. Everything else is 801.

I see what you mean on the lower handle. I know nothing about the small models and didn't make connection.

OK...didn't know that about the 81....nice looking saw. Yeah it's some mutt arrangement on your 90 for sure. I think the mag bottom for the 80/90 are the same...so that gives you some looking range. The correct plastic wing though is a tough part to find....probably need a sacrificial donor.

When I was loggin', I just pitched the Jon punk spike that came with the saw and fashioned my own at a gold mill I used to work at. I can take a pic of it on the saw if you like. Worked great in the real world...fashioned it a bit after my Husky 2100 spikes. I could never figure out how to attach a sister spike to the bar cover on the 80....like Husky did on the 2100.

I don't know much about it yet, but I do know it needs a new switch.

Any body have one they want to get rid of ? :)

490 rare find

Thought some of you might appreciate this very nice original 490. It was a CL find ... seller had no idea what he had.

I'm thinking about putting this on the classifieds since it's too nice to take out and thrash in the woods and I'm not really a collector.

200 psi bone stock, no hint of any chain rash, looks like it sat in someone's garage for 20 years. Did the usual clean up on it, carb kit, fuel line, etc.

If you can't find an original you can just use an old Homelite switch. I would put an aluminum plate in that square hole and drill a hole in it to accommodate the switch. You can epoxy the square plate in the hole and it'll stay just fine.

This one is over on the I saw it on..... thread

It at least shows what type of switch is in there. I have the Husky version and it also has a toggle switch.

I may be able to help, but it will be off a Skil or Partner. Same thing. I will look tomorrow.

It's my undestanding the little Jred in the photo posted by jdeere66 is a Frontier/Trail. I have two case halves for the Jred, and while very similar they do not match my Partner/Skil saws. I started a thread asking about them and received some good replies.

I looked at the shop, and the only one with a switch doesn't look like it would fill the hole you have. Its white and the slide is only about 10mm wide, about 3/4" long. And it doesn't feel like there is much left of the switch.

So you found some good info, as far as I can tell.

Olympyk/Efco made a tophandle for Jred, I think that was only post-buyout by Husky, mid-late-90's. I have hears rumors of a previous TH model also, but no proof.

Assorted pics

Here are some pics of my fallin' spike on the 80 I made. And also some pics of the factory fallin' spikes on the 2100. Both of these saws are still working, so excuse the physical condition. The bottom handle on the 80 is incorrect as we were discussing earlier. I do have one more 80 in a box that has a full wrap(waiting to go on the 90) and possibly the correct bottom handle for this 80. And no, I didn't do that horrible welding/gusset job on the wrap handle...I actually paid to have that done....complete with a jar of Vaseline.

Then I got into the Arkansas 90 that I bought off ebay this weekend a bit. It was in a LOT better shape than I expected. Really, really dirty, but after getting all the crap off it, it was in damn nice shape. My guess is that it was a casual wood gatherer and the PO just left gas in it too long and varnished up the works, wondered where he was gonna get parts and tried his luck on the bay. Piston, rings and jug look fine with the exhaust off. Just need to rebuild carb, all new fuel lines, carb cleaner/BB treatment of the gas tank, some gaskets here and there, new starter rope & handle and I should be able to pull it.

490 Top cover nut

Need some help finding a top cover nut for a Jonsered 490. IPL shows P/N: 503 22 70-01. Anybody know of one? Will this number cross to Husqvarna?
