That was on ebay wasn't it?? I remember the chip missing out of the right side of the trigger handle..... My 621 project came in today too....didn't get any pics yet but will....lol...you'll probably recognize that one too!!!

Yup, it was on ebay. Sam, aka "dirtydeedsdonedirtcheap" always has pieces of saws and small engines for sale.

Looks like someone was inside the case. they put them back together with a gasket sealant. There's also a chip out of the case on the flywheel side.
So, I scored another case on ebay for $15 and I'm ordering a crank case gasket.

I gotta chip missing off my project Husky 2100 case....really weird place on the back that doesn't matter if it's there or not. Hard to imagine how that got broken off.......lol

This saw took a good hit at one time. The chip out of the case had a thread in it for the cover, it also bent the AV portion of the front handle and dented the muffler.

Since I'm going to split the case, I'm following Robins good advice . . . . . . . I ordered a pair of crank seals today. :)

Paid too much but with all you fellow collectors watching Ebay like hawks I figured I better just buy it now.[emoji2]

Looks like it will clean up really nice, hopefully the inside of the tank hasn't shed paint yet and the cylinder looks good. The 70Es I've got now are beat up and cobbled together so it'll be nice to have a clean one in the collection.

That is a pretty nice looking 70E......and it will clean up nice.....good score for a good runner....

Actually the J'red folks on this thread will back off or tell you if we're bidding on a particular saw or saw part.....all you have to do is ask. That does not apply however, to the general AS forum. I know that if you post about a saw in most places, you're just alerting hoarders to outbid you. Not so here in this thread....although I can't speak for the rest of humanity. You might have saved yourself some money if one of us was bidding.

We're all about helping get as many of these J'reds running as possible and sharing extra parts....not bragging about who has the biggest &ick. The auction only shows your bid, so I'm deducing that since it's considerably above the starting bid, there was sniping going on in the last few secs.

Agreed...there just isn't anything like an original saw with low hrs, but just needs a total clean....all OE parts present. I pay premium if I know that is the case.....gawd knows I don't need anymore 'project' saws until I can retire....lol

Kevin.

Very true, you guys are always a helpful and encouraging bunch. Great thread all the way through.

Got my latest 521E in today......very nice shape overall....but odd none the less......went over it quickly this afternoon after work.......gonna clean up very nice.....but......it's missing the air filter..no biggie got plenty.....but...the heat handle selector switch is beat...got an extra I think......but.....pulled the plug to check for spark...was pulling it over and noticed the top of the piston was shiny.....hmmmmm......had spark...pulled the muffler to check out the piston......piston new....machine marks very visable..some light vertical carbon scratches...but single ring and flat top piston........but..... the 52/52E and 521E had the same P&C......piston was domed and two ring.......49SP was the same bore and domed though not quite as tall as the 52 and single ring......but...will work in these saws....but.... was not a flat top......have no idea what piston in in there but will find out. Was pretty certain I knew all the pistons that are/were available for these saws....(only OEM and one brand aftermarket)........but never seen this before.........this may be a piston for a 49 Husqvarna.......If I get a chance I'll take a few before and after pics.......this baby must come apart....inquiring minds need to know........

Oh oh....sounds like someone had a 'better' idea.....hope they knew what they were doing on piston substitution. Did you check compression...just curious? I can't see the advantage in substituting a flat top for a dome top....probably couldn't(or wouldn't) find the correct OE piston type.

I didn't have time to check compression with a gauge.....seemed to be OK when pulling it over. I do have a NOS piston/rings/pin and also an NOS P&C kit and a few used but in good shape P&Cs so it isn't a problem one way or the other.......but I am curious.....the reason I thought it maybe a 49 Husky piston is that is a flat top 44MM single ring piston that has the right sized wristpin. I've thought of trying one but never wanted to spend the money just to try........and then VEC came out with a pretty nice AM 49Sp piston and I did a build thread on the main saw forum with lots of pics......

Nice saw Marc, IMO I don't think you paid to much for a running saw of that model. I'm finding it's the ones that don't run that end up being money pits sometimes.

Nope....that 601 is from '68-'69...... no one had though of AV in those days......compare that 601 to say a Homey SXL or a Mac 10-10 and you'd think it did have AV!!!! It's so much smoother to run than either of those it's not even funny....all about the same size..within a cc or two......601 will bury either of them too...plus it's a lot quieter too.....same basic motor as the 621....

Actually the Jonsereds 62 came with AV in 1969 - pretty much the same saw as the 1970 621. ;)

Speaking of money pits . . . . . . . . . I popped the flywheel off the 621 and look what I found!!!!

IMG_0637.jpg

Some homemade-cobbled solder job that was kind of connected to the coil on one side. Missing screws in the points cover with an oversized self tapper on one end.

Then I realized there wasn't any condenser, so I popped off the points cover and L@@K what I found!!!

Wow.....the older J'reds had such a nice point system as far as maintenance and durability. Just to throw an electronic module in there for general principles doesn't make a lot of sense to me. And there seems no end to the OE point assemblies floating around on the Net and otherwise. If it was a horrible system and you had to pull on the saw 15+ times to start, then I could see it. If my 80 is dead-ass cold in the middle of winter and I have to pull on it more than three times, then there's a problem.

Well certainly since you have the right OE piston/rings/pin, you can try to figure out this anomaly...got me interested now...lol

Hmmm......I was using the Acres site for time frames...he says 62 came in 69 to 70. But the 601 is from 69-72 and the 60 being from 66-73 and the 621 coming out in 1970.....but we know from earlier this not all his info is correct. Doesn't seem right that they would have continued to produce the non AV 601 for 5 yrs after they introduced the 62/621. You probably have a more accurate timeline for these saws. 68 would be the earliest I've heard of Jonsereds having AV.........do you suppose they came out earlier there than in the US market?
