Oh I don't know Dean...they say looks are deceiving...........this is a very clean saw....looks to be well cared for but I may have to totally disassemble the entire thing before it's right again.....and probably will......

Well I was right........nice looking saw.....but the beauty is definitely "only skin deep" . Yep I sure know how to pick 'em Dean...LOL!!!! Torn this 521E down last night to see what that flat top piston was all about.....found many issues...some bad...some simply odd......some...well I'll let you be the judge..

This saw will probably be consigned to the "many 521E parts saws" pile.....which was not what I wanted...but not a bad thing either. Didn't pay a lot and got my money's worth...LOL!!!

That said, the condition of the paint and exterior parts is well worth what I paid...to me at least.

I will be posting pics and explanations over the weekend in this thread of what I found.......it will be definitely interesting...stay tuned.....some stuff you never seen before....well.... at least I haven't seen before...........someone had a creative mind.......and to much time on their hands.....

This should be interesting. :popcorn2::drinkingcoffee:

I think the only new parts on the saw is a set of Caber rings and a carb kit. Once the rear handle is complete, I'll be ready to pull the rope.
The back AV buffer is giving me problems and the nut that holds the top cover vent on.

That'll be a darn nice work saw Dean.......Pretty is....well.... just pretty...we like pretty..... but "chrome don't get ya home" we always said.......

OK.....so I already fixed a failed clutch bearing and inner race/sleeve on this 521E just putting the B&C back on....now I want to know about this new flat top piston....removed the carb and muffler getting ready to unbolt the jug....Hmmm... something isn't right with this carb......different......the bore is way to big for an HS 21D. It's a Tillotson 175D....a bit of research finds it from a Partner/Jonsered/Husky 185K.....(cutoff saw)....Tillotson application chart just says Partner.....but the linkage and H&L and idle adjustements are all in the proper place......would bolt up and the controls would operate properly on any Jonsereds saw from the 49sp to the 90. I haven't found a lot of info on the 185K but believe it to be around 100 cc.......carb has extra fuel circuits and a much larger bore.....seems overkill on a old 49cc saw....LOL! But who knows...might add an extra hoss or two.....LOL!! Couple pics of the carb and home cut cork carb gasket....quite thick and squishy but looked to be workable.....

Onward...muffler had not been altered other than the usual dents.....SO....."Off with it's head"!!! Checked out the cyl first......no scoring.....pretty nice...except.....the plating is gone on the left side of the ex port.....mostly below the port.....from it's location I'd guess someone got carried away with a ball hone......probably run fine ...for a while .....as it's below where compression starts to build....but it's headed for the trash can.......I have a half doz or more of these cyls used but in good condition plus a NOS piston and NOS P&C for the 52/52E/5321E....so these parts are not an issue.........cyl pics.....so far I've tossed the clutch bearing, the carb and now the cyl........BUT WAIT....there's more!!!!

521E 010.JPG 521E 011.JPG 521E 012.JPG

Now the moment of truth.......what is this piston.....went to pull the wristpin keepers...one was bent way to far...surprised it hadn't already fallen out......now it starts to get good......push the wristpin out...and notice immediately that there are no thrust washers on either side of the con rod.....and the wristpins is way to small dia......but there has been a sleeve machined to bush it back from 10MM back to 12MM!!!

521E 005.JPG 521E 006.JPG

I look the piston over ......not a mark, number or casting mark anywhere to tell what the hell this is.....the only mark was a hand scribbled arrow pointing to the ex side....I still don't have a clue what this is so I post an ID thread in the main saw forum and Adirondackstihl came back with the ID...an aftermarket VEC for a 350 Husky.......I checked it out and sure 'nuff that's what it looks like to me too........THat's one of the things that make this site so awesome........ask a reasonable question and someone will have the correct answer........

Now looking down into the crankcase and spinning the crank I notice that the edges/ends of the crank counter weights don't line up......these are just cast surfaces but still always more or less are even.....sorry I didn't think to take a pic of this......but I know what this probably means......seen it before......actually been the cause of it before.....I don't usually speak of the "incident".....

So I pulled the clutch drum and bearing...set up a dial indicator and checked the sprocket shaft runout.....WHEEEEE!!!!!!!!

As you can see starting at about 0.001" and rotating through to the high spot at close to 0.024" leaves about 0.023" runout..................:dizzy:.................:dumb2:........doesn't sound like much....but it is.....to much by about 0.020"-0.0022" ..........

I sure can pick 'em...eh Dean??? LOLOL!!!!!!

W T F, Robin??? I'm sorry man.....I hate that sh&t, cuz more and more people are doing that on ebay these days. The J'reds parted out though, are often now more valuable than a running saw...so there is some redemption, especially if it has parts you need. It's one thing to have some fun and build a Frankensaw, but then to sell it like an original saw is just plan fraud.

Riddle me this....is he an AS member or a member over on the 'other' site? Collectors and buyers in general need to know....

Kevin

I don't think he knew any more about he saw than I did.......just acquired it to sell I imagine. Was sold as not running. I didn't even try to start it...just as well. I am not unhappy...only paid $52 plus a fairly heavy shipping charge but saw is clean and all the externals are in super shape for the year nearly new 18" B&C.

The 521E was the "Cadillac" of the 49cc Jonsereds series...came stock with a closed port high compression P&C......two speed electrically heated handles front and rear, electronic ign and a chain brake.....rather expensive saw in the day. I have a well worn one that I use frequently...runs nice and always the same......and there are days up here when the heated handles are very nice indeed.......

I have a NOS set of cases, a NOS P&C, NOS ign (Thanks John!!!) and a couple parts saws with whatever else I might need to do a full ground up build on this saw....or what's left of it!!! LOL!!

The seller's ebay name is erkllc4141 and has good feedback...he got mine.....sold it not running/as is......don't know if he is a member here or there....I couldn't have asked enough questions to uncover the problems this saw had.....wasn't stuck..pulled over with comp...had spark etc.......hard to know without a thorough going over........looked good ..felt good.....but was not so good!! LOL!!

Crap, I was hoping to view the posts from you of a very cool rebuild on that model.
Sounds like you have all the parts, it's just going to take more time than you thought.
You still planning on launching into it now?

I don't know Dean.....probably not just now...I have four saws here to complete for others and can't justify working on my stuff and put them off.......I have other saws to use!!!!! LOL!!
