You are right about Acres' timeline - and I don't really have any better info on the time-line of those saws. My memory just was slipping sligfhtly, regarding 1968 vs. -69. :)

Got a few pics of the latest 521E........this is the way it came to me....right out of the box....haven't even dragged a rag over it. It will shine with very little cleaning.....but from what I've seen so far will need a thorough investigation.......and a few parts.......

Nice looking saw Robin, I think you're better at picking projects than I am.

It came with a pretty nice 18" bar and 70% Carlton 3/8" full chisel chain.....found an issue when I tried to mount the B&C for the pics...........clutch drum did not turn freely...........when I took it apart it was easy to see why.......inner race was toast/rust and the bearing wasn't hardly any better.....replaced both with NOS parts I had........drum race and crank cleaned up fine with some brown scotchbrite....opened up the grease gallery so I can grease that bearing....was pretty plugged. Needs a new 3/8" X 7 rim too but that can wait...I'll be back in there installing a new crank seal anyway....and I still gotta get that piston out to figure what the heck in is.....

What does the dealer sticker say, Robin?
And what's up with the "greenie" in the background?

Hey Eric.....I'll check when I get to the shop...I think it says "Jewett City" something or other....it's in Conn. I believe my 910 came from there too...
The "greenie" is a clients 359......not mine.....snapped crankshaft....picked up a good case and crank...put in new seals and started cleaning and moving parts from the old saw to the new case........waiting on another handful of parts now.......

Oh I don't know Dean...they say looks are deceiving...........this is a very clean saw....looks to be well cared for but I may have to totally disassemble the entire thing before it's right again.....and probably will......

Question: Some clutch covers I see have silver on them, some don't. I know they're all pretty much interchangeable but . . . . were the silver clutch covers just for the silver top models?

The 621 I just bought didn't have a silver clutch cover but everything else looks original. I'm assuming it was changed at some point to a solid red one or did they sell silver tops with solid red covers??????

That is a very good question Dean. I don't know the answer for sure........but from what I've seen...perhaps the covers that came originally on most saws had the silver trim....replacement covers did not seem to......it wasn't just a silver top thing either...my original 49SP came with a silver trim clutch cover. Perhaps Niko, Bob (spike60) or Eric might have more info on this........a lot of what I've learned about the history of these saws I learned from them.....and I'm sure I haven't learned it all!!! LOL!!!

I've wondered about this too. I think like Robin said, the replacement cover never had the silver(I've never seen a NOS cover for sale that had silver). And it's a common thing to have a replacement clutch cover put on at some point.

So Dean....are you keeping the 90 then, or selling it?

NOS Parts;

Complete handle and all AV rubbers
Gas cap
Top cover
Recoil cover, handle and spring
Carb adjustment grommet
On-Off switch

Pretty, Dean.....I don't think the pull handle is correct though for the saw. Saw Again used to have the correct ones, but be wary of their condition rating there. I paid like $14 for one that was "good condition"(OE) and it was in my estimation at least, poor condition. That's one part that needs to be in the best condition you can find if you use the saw a lot. Yours looks new or close to new...just isn't OE I believe. Again, it's one of those parts that's usually replaced in the life of the saw.....few owners are going to wait around for a OE pull handle if something else fits and works well. I got an NOS handle from that dude who sent me the boat prop by 'mistake'. And I paid like over $25....ridiculous price for a hunk of rubber.

Hehe . . . . I'm keeping it. Too much money in new parts, plus it runs great!!!
Even though I was ready to give up on it a couple of times, now there's to much blood, sweat and tears on it . . . . some of it was even Robins!!!

(It's a good thing he wasn't hit with anything when the crank key broke.) :surprised3:

I actually do have the original pull handle, but it's so flimsy and rubbery, I didn't like it. Actually pulled out of my hand a couple of times so I bought one of the hard plastic handles they have at SawAgain.
If I bump into a good OE handle I'll probably buy one, but it'd have to be NOS or look damn close to it.

Yeah, I didn't think pull handles where a big deal until I tried to find an NOS one for my work 80. So then I bought the "good condition" OE handle and was greatly disappointed.....was like buying a used safety razor. The rubber on the Husky 2100 handles hold up much better than the 80/90 handles...dunno why. The other 80/90's I bought for parts etc all had silly putty pull handles.

I've seen this before on other high-end Euro products;the country of origin had some crippling national strike or some supplier everyone used made something woefully inferior. It would come to haunt the manufacturers so much that they would institute a model change to try and save face. This is before throw-away mentality engineering gripped the world....when things would last well for more than 5 yrs.
