This has been discussed before, and we don't really know if they did or not at the factory.

On the North American market (Tilton) there is little doubt that the 801 replaced the 80 in 1976 though. Never trust Acres site regarding such questions - there just are too many mistakes there, on production years.

Very interesting and logical. The 801 and 90 would have been a better visual match in the NA ad literature for sure. Weird they didn't call the 90 a 901 when it came out.

So did the 80 carry on until 1980, mostly sold in Europe, or did it cease production earlier......or do we even know?

As I tried to suggest, there is no evidence either way about that question - so far! ;)

Also, the 90 was the last entry in that "saw family", so there wasn't really time for a 90 and 901 scenario. Of course there was a 910, but that one was quite different, and in a "family" of its own.

Development was fast back then, and economic realities set in as well....

Something I forgot to mention: Tilton didn't cover all of North America, there were at least parts of the PMW that was out of their territory, as I understand it - and that's where the model 81 appeared, just to confuse the picture further..:D

As far as I know the 81 just was an 801 with a non-OEM full wrap handle and different labels though, so no big deal?

That's not really what I meant. My point was since they already had the 801 and dropped the 80(supposedly), then with the introduction of the 90('76 or so), it would made more sense to have the 801, call the 90 a 901 and 111S as their Pro saws. And even when the 910 came out and the 111S dropped...it still follows a logical number progression in their Pro saws.

This is a 801 I got recently for free. I repaired a Stihl 090 for someone I know and he gave me the Jonsered.
I am impressed with the saw and I did not know until working on it that it has a Mahle cylinder. I put new fuel lines and filter, rebuilt the carb, and put in new crank seals.
Nice saw.

Nothing was built better than the older J'reds...not Husky not Stihl, not anything. Their older Pro line saws will last a lifetime for the woodcutter with the modicum of care. I read on the pig site about how you adjusted the point's plate...got lucky there. The SM has a factory procedure...weird but works. Best to mark the plate with a Sharpie or scratch awl before you move it or take it off.

I don't think I have a J'reds jug that isn't a Mahle.

It was my understanding that Bailey's sold Jonsereds saws back in the day....like the 70E in great numbers. Tilton was located in Portland, OR. Some guys living near loggin' sites just mail ordered everything from Bailey's(like me) and you cut your best price deal. Husky dealerships starting popping up as I was loggin', while I never saw an actual J'reds dealer until I moved over to CO in the early 80's. I never knew anyone running say, a 111S in the woods on the shows I worked at in OR & WA. That isn't to say they didn't have their loyalists....I just never met anyone who had one. Now when I left to CO, the 900 series J'reds came out starting with the 910 and I talked to quite a few loggers my age that used them in the PNW. I should have asked them where they got their parts & service other than Tilton. Tilton was a long way if you're way up in WA, or down towards the bottom of OR.

Hey Kevin I did mark the plate that is how I know how much I moved it. I followed your advice but improvised a little as I like to do sometimes on the saws.

In the picture you can see where I marked it with a sharpie and then moved it a small amount clockwise. Left side of the plate that the points are mounted on is where the mark is.

Back from 8 days on the island lads.......you all been quite chatty I see!! Some nice looking projects there I see!! I took the new 490 and my old 490 to camp with the intention of giving the new one to an island friend......but alas......it ran strong but did not have the stable idle I insist on....now that the time has changed it's dark by the time I get back to the shop after work......no time to run a saw after work.....thought I could dial it in on the island but that didn't pan out. Either to high an idle or to slow.....may have to get back into the carb......at any rate it returned home with me. Not going to hand off a new built 490 that isn't right.......my old one is near bullet proof......start it up...set it on the ground and it will idle itself out of gas before it starts running weird......the new one will too....someday....but not today....

Ran another few liters through the 630 rebuild today. Fundraiser firewood cut. Decks of lodge pole. I sure like this series.

Felt really strong. 20 tanks or so in now. Seemed like I spent half the day sharpening chains and tuning saws for other homeowners though. Something along the lines of, "I want mine to cut like yours." So many folks with the latest/greatest and bombed out chains. Probably could have sold the Johnny 3 times over.

You're gonna get that with homeowners, Cory. Tim told me he knows guys that never sharpen their chains. Like driving a performance car and never tuning it....I don't get it, but it happens.

When I took that little Husky to my friend on the coast, I told him just to take the chain to a shop. He'll never sharpen it no matter how much time I spend with him. Be better off to buy a new chain now and then too. Last time I was there, the saw hadn't been touched since I left. He had some stumps he wanted me to cut, so I gave 'er hell. Threw chips all over the front of his motorhome and he didn't like that. I told him a long time ago I'm not house broken and require a buffer zone all around where I'm working.

That 111S that was linked awhile back is at $770 now with a hair less than two days to go. These are just the visible bids....who knows what the top snipe will be. I still think it may top out near a grand if the buying fever takes over....sharks feeding on bloody chum.

And the reserve isn't even met yet, I'll take two...hahahaha!!

I don't get it??? There are two totally different saws in those pics.......one has the recoil sticker/emblem and the paint is great on the trigger handle.....the other has no recoil emblem and paint is pretty worn away on the trigger handle.....which one do you get...the nice one or the well used one????

AAAAh........now I see it......you get the beat one...he listed the serial number yesterday...in the last pic you can read the number.....clever.....I bet there'll be a dust up when whoever pays the way long $$$ expecting to get the nicer one unboxes that one!!!!!!!

Yeah, I noticed that too! WTH?? I thought maybe I was seeing things.

Wow, I would think that's certainly a viloation of some eBay policy and whomever buys this certainly has the right to a refund. Showing pics from two different saws....when you're trying to sell ONE. With this kinda money, I'd be really pissed to get the beater.

I wonder what the reserve will be???? Does anyone know this seller...any history?

I sent him a question through eBay....see what he says. Just because he lists the serial # of the saw you're buying, doesn't let him off the hook. He also needs to state that the saw for sale pictured is not necessarily the one you will receive...of it's fraud in my book.

Kevin

I have never bought a saw off of eBay or such. But, reading the seller's remarks on that saw, I am not convinced. "Serviced by a professional mechanic." For that price/professional service, you would figure he would have cleaned the cobwebs off of the bumper spike, de-greased it and tensioned the cord properly.
