Walnut!!

i cut this walnut this afternoon. 34-36" on the stump. bottom 10 footer had a lil over 300 bft in it, ~24" on the lil end. there was a bit of stump rot out on the end but it was solid in the middle. this one will bring some nice $

Nice pic's as always so how much will the walnut bring and how do you pay land qwners down there.

on this job i am just contract cutting. In this case the timber was bought outright, (i believe around $52,000 for the job) around 250,000 bdft, so by the time is is all said and done it will prolly cut close to 400,000. I do have a few of my own jobs lined up in which i will be cutting, skidding, marketing and will be doing it on profit shares (sell the logs and split the profits with the landowner). i will be renting a skidder for those jobs. btw that walnut could bring upwards of 1000-$2000 for the bottom 10 ft log. the entire tree could brind 3-4 grand!

Nice pics siLlogger! How much beech you got in that stand? I like cutting beech. I know beech likes water, are there any streams to cross? Or is it a swamp type place? Is the allis chalmers yours or the people who your contracting for? That's a nice skidder too! Once again awesome pics! :)

there is quite a bit of beach in this stand. i'm glad u lke cutting the stuff because i sure don't. this job is actually in the hills. im at the highest point on the job on top of the hills in the pics, but it is pretty steep will a few creeks at the bottoms of the hills. all of the big equipment is the people that i'm working for, as of now i just run my own saws...gonna wait about 2 more years and get some other things lined up before i buy a skidder, etc. IL is rather odd, i grew up an hour N of this job, and there is no beach, poplar, or cherrybark red oak, and very little sweetgum or hard maple in the woods. but about 30 mins south of were i grew up there is cherrybark red oak, and right at an hour south poplar, beach, hard maple and sweetgum grow in abundance in the woods. difference in soil types i suppose

That's the way it is here, big differences even a mile away from each other. :D :) :rockn:

what sort of veneer are they buyinig???do they do any traveling to buy logs??? very good to work with?

They buy maple, ash, cherry, walnut, white oak and hickory. They like the maple and ash to have small hearts in them. Sometimes they want ash and sometimes they dont but everything else is usual steady. They do travel and easy to get along with and fair.

alrighty, im getting ready to start on a patch with some nice white oak, hickory, and post oak on it and i'm trying to get some people lined out to buy the grade. gotta diversify some times to keep the buyers from getting lax. u able to work over there today or did u get rained out?

It rained over here this morning but lately I havent been logging because me and my dad logged together for years but here lately just cant see eye to eye. So Im going on my own in business. I ve Lined up a few jobs and just wanted wait til the weather is dry so the cash flow is constant. And i found a skidder just now so I should be cutting in the next few weeks.

what sort of skidder did u find? u usually cut around cape? hope all goes well for you

I found John Deere 440D out in West Viginia its in an auction out there this weekend . I got couple I might settle for if that don t work out 440C in Kentucky and 540d in Wiscousin but I want that 440D because thats all I ve used. I mostly cut in Cape County , Perry County and Bollinger County but Im not afraid to travel for a good piece of timber . Where do you mostly cut in Illinois

Jefferson, Franklin, Perry, Washington, Jackson, Williamson counties, and a few more that i can't think of. basically anywhere from around Mt. Vernon south.

Good pics.

I know Tom from East Perry Lumber. They must make pretty good money on the logs they buy...they must have the nicest log trucks I have ever seen.

I'm a landscaper by trade but I have worked for a logger in the winter months. I like logging but I also think it is too dangerous to be in the woods felling or topping. If I got hurt and couldn't do my regular gig my family would suffer.

BTW- what do you guys think about all this rain? I have about 20 acres of grass to cut yet this week and I'm not sure if it will happen.

where u from?? last july one of their knuckleboom trucks was loading some logs off of a job that i had cut early one morning before a storm came in and when it left and pulled out on the road it got hit by lightening!! but he still got the truck home!!! yea, i'm i'm gonna be rained out until atleast early next week. 20 acres???must be cutting hay

I'm from clinton county IL. Also, all the grass I have to cut is not hay. They are all 3+ acre yards that I maintain for high end clients. I hope to be able to cut a few tommorrow. The grass doesn't stop growing in the rain so the longer it rains the harder my job gets.

Bad news about the lightening. At least the driver was not operating the boom when it happened.
