Just not sure sawstop has any correlation to chainsaw kickback except they both entail user safety...
Agreed, it is not the same problem. However, part of a research project is to look at related research. I think the SawStop is related because it is using electronics to sense a dangerous condition. Also, if a SawStop like device could be invented it would become impossible to get injured from a chain saw.
 
I would think a sensor of human presence with electronic stop of the feeder wheels for a brush chipper is much needed.
This^! It's desperately needed in the industry and if successfully designed would be adopted by MNF's across the industry. The anti-kickback idea....well that's much less of an issue as there is already a simple, manual device that is very hard to beat. Work out a good device to make chippers safe and you'll have the phone running hot.
