Hello all.

I'm looking for a good top-handle saw to limb the tree with once it's on the ground. I have a couple of BIG oak tree's to cut up and want something small, light and comfortable. Brand does not matter, although I do like Stihl and Homelite.

Thanks.

Why not go with a rear-handled saw like the Husky 346? A rear-handle design is much better for the task you need.

Roger that! Top handled saws are not designed to be used bucking limbs on the ground. Besides the improved chance of kickback due to handle design, they just plain suck for very much cutting due to transfer of all forces to the wrist.
So, imo, get a light rear handled saw, and leave the top handled stuff for the in-tree work they were designed for.

PS whats wrong with your 025? It's perfect for what you describe.

Look on Ebay For Chainsaws, Two Sellers I bought 4 saws from last week.
They Have the best small saws @ good prices. search sellers speedscreamer
and vikingdan4. Their stuff is fairly clean and in good shape.Saws I bought
were between $25 & $42 plus s/h :)

Good Luck!!

When I cut up a tree for fire wood, I take everything but the smallest of branches. The 025 gets a little heavy after awhile.

OK. So what's a good, lightweight rear-handle saw?

Sedanman. Give me a price.

Here's my 30 year old mint 020 I got from Max. It's a good saw for recreational use or just plain having fun.

If you like those 020's, get one with a rear handle there great and easy to use.

Agreed. I'll echo that a rear handled saw will be better and safer for your application, and more comfortable as well-less bending over, hands further apart and more stable, and trigger hand at a better, more comfortable angle than on a top handled saw. If you're looking at an 020 (good saw) look at the AVP model, which is rear handled, and you can find them on ebay for $100.

Maybe an Echo 345/346 model would be perfect for this application. light enough to serve well, and powerful enough to do most any task you dream up.

I'm looking to get something used. I'm trying to not spend a whole lot of money.

I use a Poulan 2000 which is top handle. 7.8lbs powerhead. 11 years use with not work on it, except for a coil module this year. Paid 99 bucks when new. But figured you would not want to here of a good ole poulan, when you running stihls.

Check eBayware for NIB Echo 345/346. You might find a good BIN price, or catch an auction that slipped in under the radar. Have you tried/considerred a 14" bar on the 025?

DO not use top handled saw's on the ground guys it's just to dangeroues !! It's even illegal in the UK. Even a good rear handled lightweight saw will be cheaper than the equivilant top handled saw second hand. The 026 is great with a 13" bar for the task you describe. Good luck.

I recently bought a Stihl MS170 for just that purpose. It works great. The factory had a $20 off sale, not sure if it's still going on, that was a couple months ago. I see your looking for used though, and Sedanman has one for sale.
