Seems like the 6401 is starting to get popular...Great saw at a great price...Now that 7900 jug and piston...is this a direct bolt on? I'm leaning toward that direction..
Now ported and muff-modded, this 6401 screams!
Ron
Yep, Big bang for little bucks and then you have the best weight to power ratio for the buck too. keep us informed.

I just stopped in the local HD, they had (2) of the Makita 6401 for $205 each. The sales guy had to look for a moment to find the authorization to sell them, but it didn't take very long.

I bought the best looking of the two, was also the best running!:blob2: I was able to start it up right there in the store, idle it and rev it, as well as check the chain brake.:biggrinbounce2:

Came with a new chain on the saw, scabbard, scrench, and owner's manual. An extra brand new chain was $10.00, but they limited me to just one.

Condition is on par with the pics shown elsewhere in this post, so if there's a HD nearby, you may want to go look. It seems like there are quite a few out there.

FWIW,
Andy

Got mine from Casey Today. It is in great shape, other than the chip in the case by the oiler. Got 1 brand new chain on the saw, and three more brand new ones still in the bag. No scrench, or scabbard, but for that price I'm not ?????ing. Thanks Again Casey! You don't know how many Home Depots I have called or stopped by. I lost count after about 13 or 14!

I used mine today, and it ran like a striped ape. Cutting some storm damaged maple like butter.

Hey Freak, get a chance to run that saw yet? Im curious how it works. I did start it, but didnt cut anything with it.

Ran it tonight. I think the tank vent is plugged, as it builds a lot of pressure just sitting. I'll have to look into that when I get a chance. It has 165 lbs of compression and the piston looks new....??? It runs good and is real torquey, but I think a husky 365 would out run it. Doesn't matter much, as I have a piston and cylinder for a 7900 on the way. It cost me about $150. If anyone needs any 20" safety chains, let me know. Got about 4 more than I have a use for. Just need to gut the heat box before the piston and cylinder show up.

Chains

Sent you a PM Steve. Those chains would come in handy for my fence row clearing and stump grinding duties. I refuse to use a good chain for such dirty work. Let me know.

Hey, if any of you easterners find anymore of those 6401's at HD, I'd love to have one. Of course, I'd put a 7900 jug on it....Just gotta have a teal and silver saw, it'll match my chip truck...

Here's what my fully woods modded 2 yr old 7900 can do..with a 32 inch bar no less.... like that roostertail?

And here's Travis again, using my ehp 5100S right after I got it from Ed with the pipe still on, creating a wildlife snag...(the first ever hopped up 5100...)

Most modern tank vents only vent air IN, not gas fumes out... (thanks to the EPA). Pressure in the tank is normal and actually helps starting.
