Got my 1-40 cleaned and assembled today. Tried to get it to pop since I don't have a carb kit yet. Musta pulled on that thing at least 50 times bot no pop. I shot mix in the carb and in the cylinder. No pop. Rechecked my spark and still got nice spark. Compression feels decent but don't have a gauge so can't say what it is. So I got fire, fuel, air. What am I missing? Anyone?

Jerry - Could be a reed issue, try a shot of mix in the plug hole or through the exhaust port. It should pop with something in the cylinder but it can't get from the crankcase into the cylinder if the reeds don't seal.

Ron - I will have a used 24" bar if you need one. I'll send a conversation your way tomorrow.

Hi Folks,

It's been a while since I've posted I finally got the carb kit for my 1-42 and went through it last night. Apart it comes.Put it back together this morning. Found a big fat blue spark but couldn't seem to get it to pop even with fuel in the carb and through the exhaust port. Anyway not sure what I was doing wrong but finally fired and away it went. It wouldn't keep running though. I think it was flooding out and there is excess fuel coming back into the carb box. By the way I took it's PSI and found only about 105PSI. The piston looks a little scored, I think more from carbon than being too lean. Cylinder looks good. I seem to be getting intermittent spark as if the plug cap is not 100% making good contact sometimes.

Although I could not replace the inlet seat and gasket because I couldn't remove the old one. Don't have a 5/16 socket with thin enough walls. I just went back to the bench to find fuel leaking all over. So I'm guessing the inlet seat and the new needle aren't meshing well..

The fuel line to the tank has yellow paint on it so I assume it's original but seems sound. The one in the tank is black and also seems good but has no filter upon closer examination

Sounds great through that new stack muffler Mark, thanks for that. I'm hoping to use this as a replacement for my Dad's 380 that I gave away on Ebay before CAD struck. This one seems a bit lighter than he 380. It has a 16" hard nose bar with a.404 chain.

A work in progress!

Reeds?? Flooded??
Haven't checked reeds. Muffler was wet.

Howdy gents, picked up some old yellow today and can't seem to figure out what it is other than large and heavy. :ices_rofl: Looked on the bottom of the block, but the only numbers there were "2008" or "20C8". Not sure if the third number is a badly stamped zero or a C. Here's a few pics. Thanks in advance for any help. :) D44 or Super 44 maybe?

I'm not sure what kind of shape the internals are in. It started sprinkling a little, so I put everything up and came in. If I find that the internals are in decent shape, what other saws would have compatible parts?

S44-I was wrong!! It should be 1-70
The s44 also has this great rotating "trousers destroying Flywheel Screen"

I am going to say 1-70 based on the style of the fuel tank and the external points and condenser. All of my 44 Series saws have a "smooth" top and the 1-70's have the raised portion in front of the AF cover.

By the 1-71 they had already changed the tank and AF to a style more like the later 1-7X and 1-8X type saws with the "wrap around" AF cover.

I should have a few parts in the attic that would help you along the way if you decide to put that saw back in running order.

Thanks for the offer heimannm, I may have to take you up on it if the internals are good and I don't have any luck looking around. I have to admit that I'm still kind of stumped. All of the pictures I'm finding of the S44 and S44A(haven't looked for 1-70 pics yet) show that upper front handlebar mount as being bright chrome, while on this saw it has been painted. I guess a previous owner might have done it, but I didn't notice any difference in the shade of the paint from part to part. If it doesn't rain tomorrow I will look the saw over a little better. Anything in particular to watch for when pulling the clutch cover/starter off?

Looks like the S44, S44A, and 1-70 have the same bore, but there is a 1/8" difference in stroke between the S44 and the S44A/1-70? What is the hole in the side of the carb box for, and how does the AF cover actually attach? I don't see anything on this one for that central screw on the cover to go into. :dizzy:
