Mac 610 Question.
While I was bucking some small wood, the chain just stopped. Long ago I removed the Chain Break, so that could not be it.
I put it down and grabbed a Husky to keep cutting. Well I got a chance to look at it today and the plate behind the clutch moved into the clutch/chain.
I removed the clutch nut, but... does the clutch need pulled off the crank? or ???
I just do not want to hurt it. Here are some pics.

I'm in the process of tearing down the 1-70 now, just came in to eat some fajitas the wife cooked up. So far, other than the exterior ugly, I've found that the plastic inlet on the carb is cracked and the front handlebar has seen better days. It appears that it rusted from the inside out on the clutch/starter side beside the lower mount. I have a 1-50 carcass in the shop that I think has a good handlebar, but I don't know if would work or not? Muffler is serviceable, but not in the best of shape either. The engine is free and still has some compression. There are a couple of marks on the piston that I could see through the exhaust port that I want to look at a little closer. Working at getting the carb box/tank bottom off right now. Seems like something is still holding it, but I haven't seen any more screws yet. Probably hidden under all the nasty I didn't get cleaned off earlier.

Edit: got the top off. Piston and cylinder look good through the intake ports. Got a lot of cleaning to do after I get it torn down. I can't see any machining marks left on the piston, and I'm guessing that new pistons aren't easy to find. Ebay search didn't turn up much the other night.

Put a little pull on the clutch and give a sharp tap on the end of the crankshaft, it will pop right off. Put the nut on the shaft to protect the threads before you tap.

Mark,
It sure is good to have spare parts!
Exactly how you said, a little tap and off she came, pulled another one from a parts saw and now my MAC is back up and working.
I love my Huskys, but the Sound of a Mac is pretty to the ears!

Thanks again for your help!

Well, I think my 1-70 project is over. :( I took the clutch off and the nut wasn't tight at all. I thought "that's odd". Then I tapped enough to get the clutch to pop off and the key fell out with it, along with a chunk of crankshaft for good measure.

Only one of these I've got. Looks like they were only made for one year, and I've only found a couple of other models that I might be able to use a crank from. I'm gonna guess that this one will be sitting disassembled in a box for a while.

You should have several options for a replacement crankshaft in that saw even though the numbers may not agree.

The 1-70 had a 1.5" stroke and used two ball bearings, same as the S 44 and S 44A, 1-80, 1-71, 1-81, 1-72, 1-82, 1-52, and 1-53 to name a few.

If you decide to pursue it, I probably have a crankshaft in the attic that would work as well.

Another option may be to find a second parts saw and combine the two into one...

I was looking at the various 1-xx models on the acres site and wasn't sure if any of the others listed as 1.5" stroke were compatible or not. I hate to assume. If I had the parts, I would rebuild it, based on what I know right now of the P/C, and the condition of the rest of it. I didn't go any farther with teardown, so that might change if get it all apart and find some other significant issue. It's going to need a lot of cosmetic work before it goes back together.

Acres site listed this saw as having been equipped with a McCulloch carb. I didn't look it over all that well when I took it off, but I'm pretty sure this one had a Tillotson on it. I'm guessing it wasn't unusual for carbs to get swapped.

McCulloch was constantly tinkering with and improving their product. Sometimes part numbers changed in the middle of a production run. One of the things they changed about this time was the crank. By changing the counterweights they reduced the engine vibrations and were able to increase the rpm some, but basically added more service life. Along with this they change the connecting rod and piston to run without thrust bearings. This was incorporated into the production run, and came in a kit sent out to dealers to install in saws that came in for maintenance.
I don't have access to the service bulletin outlining this right now, so can't give specifics, but, basically, cranks are pretty much interchangeable for the same throw, but you may need to match pistons and rods.

I have a (I think) 1-72 "Project in a Box" that was given to me. I'll have to dig it out of the shed and see what's there, but if you want it, I'll send it to you for the cost of shipping.

If he don't want it i could use a 1-72 project saw. Being on distability I have all the time in the world to tinker and i don't have a 1-72.

Nick

PS - I need a 28696 diaphragm or a good carb off a 77 if anyone has one they can let go of..
