One of the biggest mistakes a guy could make is start one indoors, even for just a few seconds

That's the truth. The worst was a little Remington with a stack muffler.
It's tough to wait if you've worked on a saw and finished it up too late to crank up outside.

Of course, ear plugs or muffs |(or both) never figure into the enthusiasm.

Believe the top is the earlier. Not sure just when the logo was adopted.

Seemed I looked forever for a SP81E decal or AF cover with a good decal. Can't remember if I found a cover or not. I gave the saw to the young ChainsawmanXX, he never reported doing anything with it beyond his search for a muffler. Maybe one day, he'll report.

Without doing any digging, is this the early version of the air box cover and sticker?

Or is this?

The top pic is the first run of those saws that didn't have operator presence levers or chains brakes.

The second pic is the version of that saw that did have those safety features.

Then there's the SP81E which had the safety features and the two piece electrical coil.

Poge - as noted, top one is the older of the two, not all of the saws with the later label had the OPL, good ol' McCulloch.

The wide cover on the SP80 above is part of the "cold weather kit" with a duct over the muffler to warm the air going into the air box. Some were black, and some on the SP60 were yellow.

The original SP81E had a two piece ignition. McBob reports that in Australia nearly all were brought back to the factory and given the later one piece electronic ignition. The actual coil is on the bottom of the saw with the two piece system and the trigger unit installs in the coil location.

The later one piece electronic ignition installs as it would on any other saw and are a direct bolt in replacement. I checked the timing just to confirm.

Mine at least did come with the OPL and a chain brake.

It needed only the slightest adjustment, it fired right up.
I have an assortment of covers, that one was near the surface.
Thanks Mark, I have a couple working brakes should I need one, although the one with that old style logo is cool, we can talk about that later.
