The bar is what you need to be analyzing, not the chain. A typical 28" D176 calls for 92 drive links of 3/8 chain. If you don't have a local shop that has another D176 for comparison, call Frawley's Saw Shop to get it sorted out. The profile of your bar looks a little wider than a more modern D176 with that number primarily referring to the bar mount characteristics and not necessarily the overall bar profile. That said, 92 drive links are what's called for on a modern 28" 3/8 .050 D176 Oregon product. But don't take my word for it...

spoke to Jim Frawley an hour ago. he said it was quite likely that as the chain stretched over the years the old farmer (his words :) probably had a link removed now and again and it went from 92 to 88 links. he is sending me a 92-link chain and I will return the new 89 link one to him.

he said he was a salesman for McCulloch back in the day.
