Well, I put some gas in the 440 this morning and primed it, and she fired, but cut off. Primed it again and the same thing. Primed it one more time and she took to running. It idles like a brand new saw, and sounds amazing. I let it idle for a few minutes and made a few minor adjustments. Then I tried to give it some trottle and it tried to die out. So I thought that it needed a little more on the low side, but that didn't help. So I tried to give it some more on the high side, but the same thing. I wondering if there is something going on with the new high speed check valve assembley I installed. I used grease to hold the check ball in place. Maybe that has the high speed circuit stopped up. Anyway, here is a short video.

Sounds Sweet. I am sure you will nail it. I have found that the high speed needle interacts with the low speed needle more than I tought they did. Too rich in the high speed seems to make the low speed needle somewhat ineffective. I could be nuts but that seems to be how they are. Useless infor for you big Mac but info...

I got the high speed circuit straightened out now. I had to take the carb back out and use a can of carb cleaner to blow through the high side adjustment screw hole. I guess I used too much grease to hold the check valve ball in during assembly. I'm working on the chain now so I can test it out in some wood. I think that I'm going to have to remove the oil tank to work on the manual oiler plunger. It seems real tight and doesn't travel in and out as far as it should, but the auto oiler works great.

Got the 440 running great now. Just had to clear that grease out of the check valve.

GO BURY IT! :msp_biggrin:

I never put the tach on my 440 when it was running, but I did check out my 640 when I got it cleaned up and back together. Surprising for an old one...

I don't know what this one is taching right now, but it does rev up a lot faster than I expected. I had bought two different flatback kits. One from discount marine and one from sugar creek. I liked the kit from discount marine a lot better, but I couldn't use the metering diaphragm because it had a hole in the wrong place. I didn't like the metering diaphragm from sugar creek because it was so tight and didn't have any slack to move like it is supposed to. I ended up heating and strectching the sugar creek metering diaphragm to increase its range of motion. Works like a top now.

If you look all the way through the McCulloch Carburetor thread you will see I ran in to that problem (extra hole in the metering diaphgragm) with the ones I got from Bob Johnson, little dab of seal all and we were in business.

I did not notice a problem with the metering diaphragm in the kits from Sugar Creek but I think I've only put them in one (my 440) or maybe one other as well.

Oh, I almost forgot to post this pic... :blob2:

Unfortunately, I will not be putting the bar and chain on the 850 tonight... I would get pelted by 1/2" hail on the way to the barn!!! :(

Anyways... what do you guys think? :blob2::blob2:

I think it rocks!!!! :rock::rock:

Well guys... the chain is too short... I figure if my saw had a 7 pin rim, it would fit... but I have the 8 pin. What do I do now? I'm sure this bar and chain will fit on the 610... so do I use this chain on the 610 with this bar when I need to, and buy a new chain that is long enough to use with this bar on the 850? :help:

You can find a local shop with the same brand of chain, and have them add a DL or two, shouldn't cost more that a couple of bucks.

You could also get a 7 tooth sprocket from Bailey's for about $5, don't know what your local guys get for sprockets. I've paid a little as $5 and an much as $12 for the same sprockets depending on where I got them.

I suggest you consider the 7 tooth sprocket for a 28" bar on that saw if you plan to cut a lot of hard wood.

I will make a trip to the Stihl dealer tomorrow and see if they have a rim that will work.

You said there were three main sizes... which one do I have? I forgot... :bang: I'm thinking standard for some reason?

Large rim, so you can run 404 on that saw, if you want.
My SP 80 is running 3/8 pitch, While the PM 850 has 404. Same spline on the clutch drum.

That 440 sounds great. Can't get any better than that.
She is definately a keeper.

But man, Were you attacked by a Rottweiler,
Them jeans are all tore up.

McCulloch 890

I scored this one on ebay a couple of days ago - it is an 890 geardrive Mac, in need of a good cleanup. After asking the seller several times about the numbers on the bottom of the saw, they replied with the answer - 'After a quick degrease we were able to make out two sets of numbers on the bottom of the crank case. It had 790 and 890 cast into it on one side of the handle and 10649 on the other side of the handle. I hope this helps'
And help it did! 103cc's of geardrive power was too much to pass up.

She needs an new recoil starter handle, muffler assy, and handle brace clamp, but I hope the saw will someday be a runner.

Here are some pics of the saw taken from the auction

Chris.
