New 1 on me

Got a 10 10 auto that pulled a new trick on me the other day. Instead of the oiler quiting such has happened before, it started oiling like heck. Three tanks of oil to 1 of gas. I checked adjuster and it doesnt seem to have moved. Any ideas lol?

Hey guys. Long time listener, first time caller:

I was looking to get in to a Mac for a bit here. I really want an SP 80(or maybe a 250 coz they look great), but I have found a good deal on a couple saws and was wantin' some advice. For a first time Mac guy with an eye towards tinkering, mebbe porting, and certainly using them a bit, would you go with a 7-10 or an SP 60? I have a line on both. Would the carbs be a big roadblock on the road to porting? I hear some carbs aren't very tunable?

Cheers

Probably need to pull it apart and clean it. Something probably stuck open.

If you can get both, if not I would probably get the 7-10 myself. Either should have a fully adjustable SDC. 7-10s are supposed to be pretty good out of the box, but I have heard from some they can be ported with good results.

"which one should I get?" haha, I remember when I said the same thing. Now, it's how can I afford to get both.

I also say the 7-10. To me, the SP60 looks like it should be a more powerful saw. But it's not. Your reminded when you run it- "where did my other 10cc's go?"

This should be right at home in a 250:)

McCulloch Oilers

Well the 10-10A sat for a couple weeks, hydrolocked again. I guess the new to me gasket just slowed the leak down. I guess I will have to go back into this one.

Went to cut with the PM650, it doesn't oil now either...diaphragm? manual oiler doesn't work either. Can the pump be "cleaned"?

Oilers on these (and some relatives) are notoriously bad. Pump can be cleaned; but carefully and thoroughly (there are check valves in there). The diaphragm should be supple, I think Mark H posted once where they can be 'loosened up' a bit by soaking in hot water with a little lemon juice (have not tried yet myself). Check to make sure your lines are clear, the auto-oiler runs off impulse from crankcase I think.

Well maybe I should send you a better a gasket this time?

On the 650, I've had good luck pulling the oiler off and squirting oil down the pickup hole and the out going hole in both the oiler and the crank case. Sometimes it seems priming like this works.

Also, I've seen many of these saws have a problem where the oil pick up line cracks where it connects to the port at the top of the tank. That would suck if it's that.

wyk - The 7-10 has a lot more zip that an SP60, but the SP60 has much better anti-vibration and would be a lot more pleasant to run all day long.

Get them both, use the SP60 for the all day cutting and the 7-10 for the occasional bigger job. The 7-10 would handle a 24" bar pretty nicely, but I have a 20" on mine simply because I like to show off. Hand that one to someone running an 026 or 260 and their jaw simply drops...

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I am starting to lean towards a 250 now. I am looking at a few runners in good condition. I'd love me a Super Pro, but they aren't showing up yet. I'll keep looking. These saws look like a lot of work to mod compared to modern saws. That's a lot of ports in there...

I agree on the 7-10,

you can rank that dude right up there with the best of the best 70cc saws.

Although they are 25+ years older, they will put a load on the truck.
