Mark's Muffler Post

Sorry this is a little bit disjointed, trying to juggle a few too many things at one time.

The first photo here shows two different gaskets used on McCulloch mufflers, on the left is the standard used for most of the older saws from the D-30/36/44 Series up through the 700/800 saws with the flat base. On the right is the gasket to fit the recessed pocket like shown in the Super 797 photo earlier.

And here is a bunch of mufflers and parts I got from a member here some while back.

And here are a few different style mufflers laid out for your enjoyment.

Now a few different types of mufflers all mounted to the Super 797. The first one up came off a 33/35 model saw. The style is very much like the mufflers used on the older saws (3-25/4-30/47/etc.) but different due to the angle of the louvers and the location of the mounting screws.

3-25/47 style muffler.

This is some of the great information I have talked about in the past.

Thanks to people like Mark.

Home again.

Mrs. Heimann adjusted the setting on the modem while I was away and now I have no internet connection at home. Hopefully that can be resolved this week.

Otherwise I will pop in from time to time when I have a moment here in the office.

Shane, fuel is not supposed to come out of that hole, I think Eccentric is on to it with something going on with the ball and seat, good place to start anyway.

Did you find the instructions on the basic setting for the 33/35 carburetors? I know I have them somewhere if you don't have a copy.

I am going to be a while getting caught back up again...

Mark

After some fiddling the other day the fuel quit coming from that hole. It was not screwed in far enough. Based off the intsructions it says put the primer rod in that hole and turn the bottom screw until the jet body thing hits the rod and then turn it out three turn. No matter what I did the rod never got hit by the jet body thing I was screwing in to get the intial setting.

I know you have a good memory Mark and I will take a picture of what mine has in the hole for the jet deal as I am wondering if there is something missing as to why the initial setting can't be acheived.

Glad you are back. I was ready to send out a rescue party:msp_ohmy:

200, 1-40, Mm15 ports

I know this is off the current subject but if you look at Mark's photos of mufflers, about in the middle, you will see a 200, a 1-40 and a Mc15. Mark mentions and it's easy to see that the center exhaust ports are closed. This goes back to a post by madhatte on page 804 about the 1-40 being detuned. The 1-40, Mc15 and 200 (that I know of) don't have all their exhaust, transfer, or induction ports. There may be other Macs that are detuned in this maner.

I'd really like to know what McCulloch was trying to accomplish with this and what other Macs might be detuned in this maner.

most of the 600 series like the 605, 610, EB, etc are detuned with the exhuast port as compared to the 650.

I noticed in your sig that you have a ported 610... how did the saw respond to it?

it responded very, very well. i opened up both intake and exhaust. i got a couple buddys that have PM610's and they were also very impressed with it. it wasn't the RPM increase that was nice, since these saws can't really rev any higher anyway with out exploding. it was the grunt that it got from the port work that was so impressive. it is by far the best running 600 series saw i got, better than the PM650 or PM655 easy. i blended the intake spacer to the intake port, also the exhaust inlet into the muffler was smaller than the exhaust port so i blened it as well. i got a couple videos of it running but since there is no side by side comparison its hard to tell how well it runs. also, i've since leaned it a bit more after breaking it in and its really coming to life.

sounds like i need to make another video for comparison purposes!

it pulls so well, i might even try a 8 tooth sprocket to get the chain speed up?

check out this email that i've copied to this post. someone sent this to me through ebay. i don't know the person, they don't seem interested in the saw. but they must think they're the smartest Mac guy out there.:msp_mad:

its was sent to me about the SP81 for sale.

Dear joeymt3,
Two things I see you need change . The old style two shoe clutch ( they slip that is why mcc. used the three shoe from the big saw on like early sp80's and on) the 8 th. drive sprocket ( more load on clutch ) . but look very good

Bolt holes are standard across Super-series blocks & 90-series blocks, but you'll have to do some port filing to match a late-model 105/125.

I think your new found friend is confused. I am not aware of any three shoe ten series clutch. Ron

here is my reply:

Dear gandstillersales,

you see two things need changed huh? i didn't list this saw to be judged, i listed it to be sold. if you like the saw and want to bid on it, your welcome. but if you don't agree with the way this saw was built then you can purchase it and change it yourself. By the way, i have a copy of the original IPL for this saw. It shows that it was furnished with a two shoe clutch only with no option of having a three shoe clutch. also, it shows that the 8 tooth 3/8 sprocket was the standard and the 7 tooth .404 was the optional. soooooo, it looks like you are wrong. reply with your email address and i'll send you a copy of the IPL so you can keep it for your records and not make another mistake like this again.

you guys are right, i'm usually pretty laid back. this one got to me though and showed my weakness. thanks for the honest thoughts

I've had people correct me on ebay listings before, some were right and I was glad they pointed it out to me and some obviously didn't know what they were talking about. I thanked the ones I knew were right, the others I just didn't reply to.
