Lee -

Another nice find! Congrats! You are uncanny with not only finding saws, but really clean ones!

If you don't already have a PM1000, it cuts less like a 'beast' and more like a 'Buick' ... :jester:

Hopefully mine will look something like that after polishing and new decals.

The diaphragm from the carb is pretty hard so I have it soaking in 50/50 ATF and brake fluid. How long should I leave it soaking?

Wendell - you can take it out as soon as it softens up...

Let me rephrase my question.

How long is the maximum to leave it in and it's not going to get any better? I'm at 48 hours now and 1/2 of it has softenend quite a bit but the other half is still hard.

Which doesn't make any sense to me. It's one piece. Why would it be so different?

What years did they make that model?

You need to determine if it has an "A", "B" or "C" piston. Pistons are the same as SP80, SP81, PM800, PM805, PM850 and PM8200*. The cylinder should be marked (stamped) with one of these letters- usually near the plug. If it has no markings then it is a "B". Ebay sellers have these pistons usually around $65.00 but some are higher and there has recently been some "B"s for $45. Be sure they include the rings and the wrist pin bearings before you order. You will need the part numbers for the bearings and seals then google them. Ron

*(PM8200 has a different crank and rod; SP80, SP81 & PM 850 has a different crank and flywheel.)

Thanks to you and E, the cylinder is off. The piston is shot. Interesting enough there are still machine marks on the intake but the exhaust side was smoked. I'm betting one tank maybe two went through the saw. The last one I'm betting was missing oil. The cylinder was marked with a "B" on it. The bearings looked good but are rough spinning. Once again, I'm thinking this was from sitting for so long. It looks great under all the dirt and junk that it was covered with.

With the PM1000 Australia got the early ones without the full wrap front handle i sold heaps of em must have been 1978-79 buts ours suffered auto oiler problems which Mac soon over came
i have about 8 or so of em here now most of them are runners and run great plus i have a modded one as a hotsaw.

Excepting the one currently at auction, these are the cheapest I have seen: McCULLOCH CHAINSAW SUPER PRO 81 800 805 850 PISTON NEW BOX1008 | eBay

Well fellas the MC70 engined geardrive I lucked into came in and I was able to get some work done on er. Very solid and complete, but real dirty . I cleaned& gapped the points then reset the flywheel/coil gap which restored spark. The saw already had finger stretching compression so no need for service there. When I took off the tillotson to rebuild it, I noticed that the port in the intake elbow was much larger than the venturi in that model tillotson. I dug out an HL315 from a Homie 2100 and aftre swapping the inlet and linkage rods it bolted right up and was a much better match for the port. Anyway the thing runs excellent now lots of snarl from the muffler, revs up very fast and idles as pretty as you please. Definately has a different sound, even from my 797/101B. I still need to clean it and swap on a .404 gear, but after that, there will definately be a link here to a video. This thing looks very mean as it has the largest H&S spike I have ever seen with two huge parallel spikes under the saw. This thing came feom norhtern Cali, so with that huge spike and the 116cc Kart motor conversion, I would bet it was a vetran falling saw from the big timber days.

This saw has never cut wood was origionally bought to power a kart then the guy realised it was the wrong engine
also the oiler pickup had been disconnected all i done was hook it up fit a clutch side cover and a full wrap handle
She runs like a new machine

McBob.

Hoss. Spikes like that were used mainly on bucking saws, I used an 895 with similar spikes.
Does your saw has any added stampings or etchings, maybe an SR in a circle?
