Heres the 2-10.......took it apart and cleaned it up a bit and gave it a quick scrub n' shoot paint job. Not bad. I changed the top tank/air box from a later saw that has the safety in the handle and was tapped ready to go for the cube style carb.( thanks joeymt33) I ran into a few snags here and there but i think i have everything straightened out. Ill bolt the carb on tomorrow, I have a few carb gaskets to make.

just in case you run in to this problem, i've had two Mac saws that i attempted to put a Nova chip on and the the chip would fail after a couple minutes of running. on both saws, i tried multiple chips and they would all fail very quickly. i had the chip mounted like you do, close to the coil. on both saws, i moved the chip farther from the coil and they both worked from that point on.

BTW, nice job on the restore. it looks real good

Hmm i wonder why that would happen.....regardless thanks for the heads up and the props!

Carbed up!

Ok so the cube carb is on the saw, bolted right on. The air box cover and filter are simply not going to work with this set up. I cut the filter a bit to clear the adjustment screws which kind of helped but the choke hits the filter in the open position. The cover doesn't sit all that well with no filter either, I think the carb is just to tall. Ill have to run a modified air filter, any thoughts?

P.S. I didnt try and start it yet, got to pick up some more trufuel then ill give it a go!

Let me go check the one I did that way. I made it work with original filter and cover

Well, here it is. I don't know what the difference is between mine and yours.

Maybe the intake spacer is too thick? Are there different thicknesses of those spacers? My air filter is different than yours, that could be it. Also, are your gaskets too thick?

There was a kit issued for this exact conversion, and it included a different bottom half to the tank. I think you have that part. Mark can chime in and tell you exactly whats in them, as I believe I seen a complete kit in the museum during our tour.

He and I discussed my latest Mc at the Ia GTG, and we kinda think its a converted 2-10. And my new filter isn't like that.
But I have no pics at the moment.

Your fuel tank and airbox cover look to be a little taller compared to mine. That air filter you have looks to be a much better fit, its molded to the top of the carb where the choke is, thats half my problem. The gaskets are normal size and so is the spacer im assuming.

Starts easy and idles good but dies when you squeeze the throttle. The PO told me there was a little gas left in it which he didn't dump when he added new to it so I probably have some carb work to do but maybe it just needs some adjusting.

He had it listed for $100 and I offered him $60 which got an immediate no so I went up to $80 and after many moments of agony on his part, he took it. Then, as I was walking out, he walked over and pulled out a box with several chains in it and gave it to me.

I am going to have to work on my right handed starting technique. :dizzy: :hmm3grin2orange:

I fear for your chaps, and more for my eyes if the cheese grater gets to your sweatpants.

Nice score.

Ahhh crap, ill run a modified filter set up before I pull this thing apart again:bang:

If you could mill that green plastic spacer a bit, would that help?

Whatever it was, mine has no tag in the airbox like yours. That fact will make it hard to convince the next owner what it was or is. If there is one someday.
I would have done the exact thing you are, if I had the parts. Thats why there was a kit, and that may have included a different filter and box cover. Mine was a classic barn find found in a shed.

I dont think I would get much out of it before the carb hits the original carb bolts holding the airbox to the engine. Its not a problem, ill custom make a filter set up for it. Ill get it fired up with no filter but i wont put it through wood untill i get that squared away.

Its all right, the next guy will have to take my word for it if i go that route and sell it. If it runs and cuts good i know i wouldnt complain:hmm3grin2orange:

Some of those 2-10s and 3-10s have a lower profile cover on the gas tank and air filter...I guess you could always change them for later 10-10 covers if need be, they are taller. I'm not positive they'll fit but they look like they would.

Thats what joeymt33 looks like he has. Makes sense going from a flat carb to the cube, you would need the extra height even if the saw was factory correct with the cube carb.

I finally got the photo's on to my computer...as promised the 1-51 from Mr. Bowsaw (Cliff).

After taking the photo's I did find the spike Cliff sent along so that is now mounted as well.

Enjoy!

Mark

Glad you liked the saw. I got it from a old time McCulloch/Partner dealer.
I never tried to start it or work on it.

I have been gone for a week on vacation. Went up to Washington to visit
my Daughter and Grandson just below Tacoma.
I went to Ric's place [saw bones]. Had a nice visit with him and bought two
saws and some parts.

If the cover is taller, will the lines not match up where it meets the tank?

a.palmer jr. is saying the tank cover and the air box cover are both taller on the 10 series saws with the factory cube carb. If i changed both covers for the fuel and air box it should work correctly. If i only changed the airbox cover then yeah it wouldnt match up with the tank.

Ok, I gotcha. If you need any parts, I can look through and hopefully help you find something else. I hope you can make it work though without throwing more parts at it.

Here's a 10-series saw equipped with a Walbro SDC and the taller cover. Still uses the 'domed' air filter like yours.

Here's a later 10-series (7-10A) that has the tank/cover setup which uses the later 'flat' air filters.
