McCulloch Chain Saws

I can hear the U-Sucks already. I ran around to a few scrap yards today and found only 1 saw.

The piston and cylinder are bright and shiny and silky smooth, and it looks like it has some history.

It will need a starter assembly and a flywheel cover but I think I can wrangle them up here. I also have a 40ish inch hardnose McCulloch bar to go with it and will have some .404 skip made up when I get it running.

Alright I fired it up. It starts at wide open throttle and will pull like hell when you keep the trigger squeezed but won't hold an idle. I got the carb at about 1 turn out on both the high and low screws. There is no idle adjustment screw. It's getting fuel when you lay into the gas.....what gives? Air leak somewhere?

Ok, I gotcha. If you need any parts, I can look through and hopefully help you find something else. I hope you can make it work though without throwing more parts at it.

it looks like i need to send you a idle adjustment screw. you will have to drill and tap it, but thats no big deal for you. it something that i forgot when i sent the first box of stuff.

you will get it to idle right when you get that screw installed. i doubt there is an air leak if you've already been through the saw.

Some of those saws have carbs with an integral an idle speed screw that goes through the carb body and bears on the throttle plate inside the venturi. The 10-10A I posted a pic of on the last page is one of those saws. Others had an external adjustment screw that threads through the carb box and bears against the throttle arm. Your carb was from a saw which used an external adjustment screw. Your carb box casting was from/for a saw that had a carb with an integral idle spreed screw. You can see the un-machined boss for the external adjustment screw on the left wall of the carb box (just to the left of the throttle arm). You can see that it's angled towards a flat on the throttle arm. You can either carefully drill/tap your carb box for that screw, swap an external adjustment screw tank/carb box on, or swap on a carb with an integral adjustment screw....

you could check those pics of my 3-10 and the low clearance airbox cover. maybe you'll see something that i don't see. somehow, that carb is working fine under that 3-10 cover. it may be the filter like you said. can you install the lid on your airbox with out the filter and it fits good?

You're nuts! It's only frustrating for you now because you're mixing and matching parts. Take apart a few mini-macs from different decades, mix and match the parts, and see how well things work out!

you could check those pics of my 3-10 and the low clearance airbox cover. maybe you'll see something that i don't see. somehow, that carb is working fine under that 3-10 cover. it may be the filter like you said. can you install the lid on your airbox with out the filter and it fits good?

Negative, tried it with out the filter and it hangs up in the back. Look at the last pic I posted of the full saw, that's with no filter under the cover.

IIRC there are several similar looking AF covers that were used on those saws. The earlier bullfrog carb'd saw covers have less clearance. There are both 'beveled' and 'flat' covers for the older saws (with domed filters) which will clear the SDC carb.............................as well as early 'beveled' covers which won't clear. The 10-10A I pictured has a 'flat' cover which clears the SDC.

Yeah maybe, but I swapped a zama carb for a older walbro carb on that EB min Mac and it fired right up. So I've yet to see a difficult mini Mac............should I insert foot in mouth now?:hmm3grin2orange:

I think so. I'll have to pour over the IPL's a bit to be sure. Your saw is a long way from not original........so why stop now?

I've seen NOS AF cover decals for these saws on feebay too...:msp_thumbup:
