You have a MAC 3516 with a horizontal engine like most of the pics here or a newer style with the vertical engine as the link you posted is showing?

..huh...that page is abit confusing...:msp_wink:...just asking if this mag was the best choice...anyone know of a aftermarket one thats better....Vertical shaft...that would be a neat trick..

Mac 3516

No, but it does remind me of my 3514 a little and sounds exactly the same.

BTW, the Mac 3516 that Overtrained mentioned last week that was posted on E-bay went for $83, ($57 + S&H to my doorstep) but somebody else got it. Seller said he had no idea if it would run after sitting in a basement for 5 years. Apparently, seller could care less. What an *****! Had he said that it ran, I imagine that saw would have sold for at least another $40 more.

Yes you are a little confused. There are two saws with the 3516 designation - the one you posted a link to is an MC3516 made by Poulan. Husqvarna owns Poulan and had recently purchased the McCulloch name and are selling Poulans rebadged as McCullochs. These saws have vertical cylinders.

The older 3515 had a horizontal cylinder and was a McCulloch. They have no common parts.

This is precisely why people often look at small Macs for sale today and just walk away from them. Who knows what they are anymore? It's a wonder there is any used saw market for them at all. :bang:

There have been saws designed by several different companies sold as McCullochs since Jenn Feng bought the name. Now Husqvarna is selling Poulans as McCullochs, Jonsereds and RedMax products.

Recycling old model numbers was bound to be confusing.

Seems like everyone uses these silly model number schemes - the displacement in cc's and the bar length in inches. It mixes measurement systems and you end up having identical powerheads with different model numbers. Dumb.

The newer Mac's from the 90s like the 3000 series or the Eager Beaver series are good occasional saws and they don't hold up too bad under a lot of work. Just ask Overtrained. He has a good sized collection of them and he has worked them pretty hard and they still run and look great. The main problem with them failing is people not taking good care of them. Now stuff from the 2000s...well that is mostly junk ONLY because of the regulated carbs.

I hear ya there. One of my friends has a Mac that says 32cc on it. I have a Eager Beaver that is identical to it except for the decals on it. I just gave it to him for parts.
