did myself a favor a couple of years (4)ago and bougt a set of Jet metic taps still all sharp and if one happens to break easy to replace- only broken 2 which make good bottoming tap if you grind the end to be usable- the cheap gold colored ones will be dull very quick like maybe 3 runs in steel

If one is going to be working mechanical repair any amount then a threading set is very handy to have , had mine since the late 60`s though mostly Dorman and the rest Warrior brands they have served me really well, used many hundreds of times along with my left hand twist drills for broken off stud and bolt removal and cleanup of threads in every type of metal whether engine building or more often Salt water marine repair.

Much cheaper to just purchase a slightly longer screw as you state the threads are good in the bottom of the hole.

When the original screw strips out there is less than 1/4 inch of poor thread left in the bottom of the bore, most times a longer bolt threads down and can catch one or two threads then fetches up as the remaining threads are tapered out to nothing.
