a junior member with only 9 posts asks a question. What he gets is 9 pages of debate as to whether his saw is a throwaway, junk to start with, shoulda bought a husky, check out my new site.....bla bla, did anyone answer the poor form mans question?

Fordman , if you still bother to read this ridiculous thread.....try a muffler mod, you can search the AS site for a lot of helpful tips, and if its got a 20 inch bar on it, and your cutting smaller( 20 inch and under firewood), I would put a 16 inch bar on it. Its safer in the woods that way, and the saw uses less of its power to spin the extra chain.:deadhorse: :computer2: :bang:

what is the power/weight ratio of these two,(290 versus 361)if you have it handy,to save me the time ...I'm not the quickest at this computer stuff...THANKS!!!:bang:

The 290 has 3.8 horses at 13 pounds for about $350, compared to 4.4/12.3/600 for the 361.

Is the 361 worth the extra $250? It depends. For some people $250 is a lot of money; for others, it's a night of barhopping.

Oh, and yes, the 290 responds well to even a mild muffler mod.

New Chainsaw Purchase Hanging up the 40 yr old Homelite

i am planning on hanging up my old Blue Home lite and purchasing a new saw. I'll be cutting about 10 bush cord this spring (hopefully more). Most of the wood i cut Beach, Maple , Oak and Iron Wood ranging between 10" to 30" trunks. Almost all of the wood i'm cutting is Standing Dead. hardly ever cut living trees. i want a professional saw but only have about 600$CA. i can get a Stihl ms 290 for 399.99$CA. any info would be great. lots of Stihl and Husky dealers near by. Thanks

On paper the MS310 would be quietly dropped from the lineup (even though it would in fact remain as the 'new' MS290M). I have to wonder why Stihl didn't do this instead of releasing the MS310 as an addition to the lineup (which originaly was a two saw family--think 029/039).

They already did that it was the 029 super. The 029 super was the same displacement as the MS310.

BTW I love my MS310.
I didn't have 600.00 bucks (for a MS361) when I went to buy a MS290.
But I did have 400.00
It was that or buy a 200.00 poulan, or sears. Then buy another one when the crankshaft breaks off in 3 months!

So for 400.00 I get a great saw that has good power and is just what I need for my firewood cutting.

Sure it is a little heavy, and might vibrate more than a 600.00 saw.
But It vibrates less than my sears/poulan 2000.
And as far as being heavy, well lets just say that If a 6'3" 275lb man complains about a 13lb saw... well Let me put it this way...

It aint too dang heavy, and if you think it is you shouldn't be using a chainsaw!

Or you could get your wife to carry it around for you!

Seriously, I did a lot of research on the new saws out there.
And the best bang/reliabilty/dealer support for the buck in my area (No dolmar here and husky are more expensive in our area ) for my 400.00 was the MS310.

I am 110% happy with it.
And when I'm done with it I will sell it and move up to a bigger stihl saw.
These things hold their value better than a toyota!

Anyway just my 2 cents

Actaully the MS310 that I have is 59.0cc
And the MS290 is the 56.5cc saw

LOL, Ekka your having too much fun here ticking everyone about the 290/310 and 390. Your not ticking me though, just sold another 290 abit ago. I told the man the boys down under use those saws as pro saws, he said really, I said sure do. Stihl MS290 usa version vs Canadian version

how come the canadian version of the ms 290 is rated at STIHL MS 290 56.5 3.0/4.1hp and the american version is ENGINE POWER
2.8 kW (3.8 bhp). Is the canadian version actually stronger, more rugged. do most of the saws use the same engine just with different bore sizes?
