hmm, minor hijack here, but mostly on topic:
I'm taking my 056 to australia soon to leave on the property. It'll be a firewood saw cutting mostly dead eucalypt and black wattle, with possible charcoaled areas. I've noticed the 056 mesh filter is crap here (UK), it's going to be something awful where it's hot and dry.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to simple mods I could make? Did/do Stihl make a better 056 filter? What did they do on the aussie 056?

There's a "flocked filter" (not as good as fleece, but..) for the 056. Don't use the old wire mesh filter on the 056 in hot dry conditions...

It is interesting though.. the 045/25 hava lousy filter system/placement, and I see many that are beat to death, have been running the wire mesh filters for 25-30 years, have filter compartments packed with crap, and they still keep chugging along... I'm betting it's depends on what the "dust" is.. and that soft wood 'dust" isn't as big a deal as some may think. On the other hand, Mt St. Helens dust wiped them out in a week or two.. ;)

have you got a p/n for the flocked one? No softwoods about unfortuneatly (or fortunately really), and it's dusty too (I know machines love a bit of dust - dirt)...

1115 120 1615 - about $39 over here!!! the MOST EXPENSIVE AIRFILTER Stihl sells...
jees, that's steep. Although I now notice cheap stihl saw parts has one. He describes the other mesh ones as cleanable, does that mean the flocked one is considered uncleanable?

Talk about making an issue out of a non-issue... Space is jumping up and down on a soap box, Lake is defending... and for what? A wrong-type airfilter in a 361? :dizzy:

For most of us, this is a non-issue. We have the flocked filter. We do not have sawdust in the intake or carb area. Type of cutting and sawdust size is irrelevant. It works. No special silicon implants are needed. Nothing is needed really, except someone with the wrong type of air filter should get a fleece/flocked filter, and people with a 361 should keep their filters on there good and tight with the knob.

So keep your knobs in good and tight places ;)

You mean to tell me you defend such a crappy filter? You must be a Stihl user. :)

The standard 361 filter works fine. Non-issue.

This is Rooshooter's picture--a stock saw sold in the locality in which it was used and used in a normal fashion. I would hate to see your idea of a bad air filter or an "issue."

Something is wrong there. I have a stock filter, on a stock 361 saw, and it is a non-issue. No dust in the carb area. Like the VAST MAJORITY OF 361 OWNERS, it is a non-issue.

But do post BIGGER photos of more sawdust... its amusing.

So, I guess people who have dust getting by just shouldn't use their saws where it's dry and dusty. Is that your contention?

Ah, you're missing the point, Space. If you have a 361 and your carb/air filter looks like that, there is a real problem. Take it back to your dealer and have it evaluated. Dry, dusty conditions or not, it should not be like that.

People who have dust in their saws should figure out why it is getting into their saws. Case in point, the original poster on this thread is running with the wrong filter. Simple fix: put on the right filter. Other people have had the filter tabs removed, running in winter mode that they should not be using. Simple fix; put on the right filter and switch to summer mode. But again, for the VAST MAJORITY of 361 users, this is not an issue.
