I figured as such. I need to check my 5000 closer but till now, I never thought much about it.

I'm assuming that the Jred 490 would be open like the 500 and the 590 closed like the 5000. I'm pretty sure the PP325 is closed.

Nice ones Frank. Seems the 5000+ is for sure a closed port. I cant tell in the picture, but is the other a + also. If not is it a closed port also?

I see another trend in that the Pioneer Partner models all seem to have the grey handles while the original Partners had black handles.

Where you getting the piston for the 5000+?

I don't know what is going to happen with the piston, mght have to find something else that can work. Might have to get creative on that, it isn't going to be stock by any means. Not sure what he has in mind yet. The top picture, that saw runs and it is a 5000+ also, I bought both of those saws from members here. Might have the one turned into a nice woods port saw to cut some firewood....LOL what a concept huh:)

I read somewhere that modders were using the early 026 piston in these saws...Not sure what it would take to make it happen?...

A little more for you;

I got this from Steve(Freakingstang) awhile back(a LONG while back).

Partner had the 500, 5000 and 5000 plus, Jonersered had the 490, and 590. When husky bought Elux, or husky became part of the elux group, they merged some stuff together. The newer saws that have air injection was actually a partner design.

With the said saws, husky came out with the husky 50 that used the parner crank, topend and carb parts.

The case, and all the covers were husky's own, but the internal parts were taken from the partner/Jred line.

The main difference I have found was the 500 usually had an open port cylinder and a non adjustable oiler. The 5000 and 5000 plus had the adj oiler and closed port cylinder (44mm). The 490 I thought was comparable to the 5000 with the closed port cylinder and the adjustable oiler. The 590 had a 1mm bigger bore cylinder with a bigger combustion chamber and the performance was not as good as the 490.

All the racers want the 490 and 5000 saws becasue they fall under the 500 class limit. The 5000 jug has a lot of good properites that can be made into a real runner. The big combustion chamber of the 590 and extra cc makes it not so desirable for the race crowd. (45mm)

Over the years, the husky 50 became the husky 51. A few of these over the years had the later 590 bigger cylinder, but most of them were the open ported design. Later along the line, husky turned the 51 into the 55 (46mm). The 55 has been made with both 45mm and 46mm p/c. a few seemed to come with the 45mm closed port 51/590 cylinder, but most of them were open port.

Mark, been gone a few days, missing out on this great Partner post. I always have had a 5000, they are great saws, but was always leary of the 325 poulan pro, The 325 is a better power saw than the 5000, it will out cut our 5100 Dolmar, and it is a great saw. I spoke to my Partner guy today and he said there are 3 different pistons for the 5000 Partner, one early closed, and 2 later open. He said a quick way to tell if you have a pioneer/partner merge saw is they have the yellow throttle trigger. Also he said the merge saws have excellent quality. He said being a Partner distributor that one of the major downfalls for electrolux was they thought that in America people were not brand loyal, that they would just buy for the saw quality not the name. He said when they tried to take Partner one of the best saws out and change the name, and ad other saws from Pioneer, and eventually all merge to Poulan Pro it was a financial disaster. He said this was a major effect for Jonsered, when they started having saws that were the same as a Husky, customers moved on. He also said this was a major sales boost for Stihl.

I asked Kevin Cut-4-Fun as he collects about every P500-5000 he comes across, at the last GTG a couple weeks back he brought I think a Jonesred 490 with the heated handles that are heated through tubes that run into the handles, I ran it for a bit and it did a great job of transfering heat. I had never seen that before.

This is what Kevin had to say,

"500 and early 5000 was open port. 82 or 83 5000 plus is closed port. 82 490 is closed port, 590 is closed port.
Poulan pro 325 type 1 early edition is closed port, late editions type 2 is open port.

Pioneer/partner used the grey handles.

Early 500 used black cases, later 500 used yellow cases from what I can tell.

Here's some pics he gave me to post.

I have seen the inside of one of those worked over P5000's. Pretty impressive to say the least but there won't be any pics floating out and about. I have ran a couple of Kevins P5000, that is what made me dicide if I ever came across one for sale I would be buying it. Kevins 5000 smoked some ported 346's that day.

I was kidding...LOL...I wouldn't know what I was looking at even if I did see the inside...

Thanks for that update and this is starting to make some sense. Thanks to Eric for posting the link to the prior thread as well.

I wondered why my 490 was so strong as I thought it was a open port 500 style. Now I think I know why. Too bad they didnt give it the 5000 style handle to go with the 5000 top end.

All I know for sure is this thing is a runner.

Here's some pics of Cut-4-Funs J-red 490, kinda shows how the heated hendles work on it, really nice shape and runs really nice. Kevin was kind enough to send me some pics of it to post.

Talk to Modified Mark, I just got him a n.o.s. front bar for his 500, if he's not using it he may part with it, or I will call this afternoon and see I the shop has another one.

Well, Del, I really want to hang on to it! I had every intention on useing it till the seller of the saw I bought come up with the 5000 setup for me and I think its a much sturdier setup that way.

I still want to keep it for a spare for my 490 or who knows if I might find another saw that needs it.
