I'm trying to help a friend with a leaky 280E--top handle climbing/limbing saw. I think his gas tank vent is faulty, but I'm not sure and haven't fiddled with it myself. He's on dialup, so I offered to do a search for him. Anybody got any info for me?? Thanks in advance.

Nate

thanks for the link. Still searching for a manual......maybe a description of my friend's problem would help. Apparently he got it running by putting gas in the cylinder, then shut it down & went inside; came back and the saw had pumped out gas onto the ground....I thought maybe the presure built up in the gas tank after it heated up had pushed out gas in the tank as it cooled down....plausible?? I don't have the saw in front of me, and have only his brief description to go on. He's already checked the carb screen for debris; there was none. I know he's going to need a fuel filter & a carb kit, but what about the leak?? Is it possible that the carb cover is just loose or something?? thanks guys.

Well, I know that on many saws, if they get flooded really bad they will blow gas out of the muffler (as you pull) ... that may be what he saw.

I'm a little confused though ... you said he's gonna need a fuel filter and carb kit but you also said that he got it running ... So if he got it running why would he need a fuel filter or carb kit? Or am I just missing somethin'?

Also, yeah it is possible for a tank to build pressure and pump gas out (the cap usually) but ask him where exactly it's leaking from. Also find out if it runs on its own (longer than just the fuel that he puts directly into the cylinder).

Oh yeah, it could be the check valve on the gas tank acting up also.

Check the fuel line also. Those saws are 25+ years old and the line may be soft and suck shut...Bob

Gas came out around the carb, to my knowlege; not around the muffler. It pumped out a couple ounces, it sounded like.

Yep. The saw is pretty old. Even though he got it running, it was pretty rough and never quite evened out. I figure a new diaphragm in the carb and new jets will help this out, and as long as this one was probably sitting, a fuel filter is always a good idea.

It did run for a few minutes. I think he just stopped to get more gas or get some tools or something. Don't know. The check valve was my first idea. I already told him about that one. That's why I'm looking for the manual. I have no idea where the tank valve is. I haven't had the saw in front of me.

Thanks for the help, though.
