The Holy Grail of Poulan Saws

I have very little experience running any saws let alone Poulans. I like my 3400's and love my 5200 but to those of you that have run most of the later Poulans, which is the best of the big saws that Poulan manufactured and sold as far as power and cutting speed? I would like to keep my eye out for one if one should happen to come up for sale near me.
I realize that you may all have different opinions and I would be glad to hear them all.

Thanks

Tim

I know it's not the right one for the 50V, I'm trying to find one for that, too...BUT..the one in the 50V has good threads, and works kinda well in the Super 33. If it's not the right plug, at least it'll work until I can find one.......

If you can post the part number of that plug I can ask the guy selling the NOS Poulan parts if you like.

Mark may know better than me, but I recall the merger between Pioneer and Partner was 1984. The small P series was done away with either in '84 or by this time. I want to say they changed to Poulan Pro somewhere around 1988.

Thats pretty much the way I understand it as well. Pioneer/Partner brands from 84 to around 88 and the Poulan pro line started around 89.

The small P series while dependable, sturdy little saws were uninspiring compard to the saws of Partner that were thown in the mix with Pioneer.

That last pure Poulan of any size off hand would be the 6900, 7700 and 8500.

There were larger saws in the Poulan Pro line after 89 but were either Partner/Jonsered designed or Pioneer designed.

Sorry, I meant to say anything with a Poulan name built before Electrolux changed their marketing strategy to homeowner saws only.
I was also wondering what you guys thought of the Pioneer versions made after the merger like the 455, 525, 655 and the Poulan Pro 505 type saws compared to the 8500 and the like.

NO!!!
It wasn't me!
I do have one in about that good of shape with a brand new 1/4" pitch chain completely gone through by ModifiedMark and myself that I will sell for $400.00 AND SHIP AT MY EXPENSE!!!:dizzy:

Kind of makes one want to search for some old out-of-business Allis Chalmers dealers ;). I wonder what a large Allis Chalmers chainsaw would bring?

I know where you can find out..........Don't I, Mark???
I'd say it will bring more today than it would have last week.

The 655 is a beast but it is hard for any of them to out-do a good running 5200/5400/8500.

Thanks, but I've already contacted him with the email address you posted a while back. No dice..That's why I wanted to see a picture of an original plug, so I would know when someone asks "Do you know what it looks like?

No, the B&S plug has coarse threads, this one has fine.

Thanks. I guess someone DID get a plug from a Super 33 (or similar model) and stick it in the JD. At least now I know that this IS the original. Still looking for a good one.......

Seriously, free shipping? I'll take 10 !

I would thought that the CC difference would give the 655 a clear edge, but wtfdik?

Mike, I won't argue (I know better) but you're starting to sound like the Troll. Would you care to wax poetic on the differences in axial balance on each of those saws?

:D :D :D

I will start off by saying, I don't have much experience with the 655, only made a few cuts with Mark's at last years GTG. If the 655 has an edge, it is a rather narrow one.:D The pulling power of the old 5200 will baffle some folks.

I messed up my 24"chain couple weeks ago on my 4200. Didn't have another, so I put a 28" bar & chain on it, been using that. I am ammazed at the power of the 4200 at only 69cc. Neither will probably win many cant races...but they do NOT lack for power, that I can tell you.:msp_thumbup:

Gregg,

Gregg,

You bring up an interesting discussion here, Gregg. Does anyone have suggestions for classes or particular saws that we will run for comparisons? (I chose the word comparison rather than race.) I'd like to have some idea so I know what to bring.

Steve, I'll leave that up to you guys..lol Last year at one point, we were comparing Brad's Pioneer P60 against several 5200's & Craftsman 5.2, The old 85cc Poulan saws didn't lose any of them. I don't recall if we tried the 655 in there or not. Don't think so. I know Nik and I tried his big bore Makita & my 385xp. In bigger wood with 30" bars, the Husky had the edge. But with 24" bars in smaller wood, they were dern close.

I guess just bring a mix of sizes. That was a big help, I'm sure.:dizzy: Whatever anyone wants to run, is fine by me. I had thought of trying some old mid-size firewood cutters, like the 306 or even the 245. Some saws that don't get used a whole lot anymore, in favor of more modern saws. I guess you could test them against some newer Poulans, like 3400-4000's, PP330, 365, 380 etc.

I get a kick out just watching that kinda thing. If everyone brings enough saws, then I won't have to risk embaressment trying to get my old junks out, and try to get them started.
I think the nicest old Poulan I ever ran, was your 7700. That was a smooth running saw, with just the right mix of power at 77cc.:msp_thumbsup: If ya got room, you might try and squeese that one in..LOL

Gregg,

The 7700 has come to mind more than once 'cause I know you enjoyed running it and have mentioned it on more than one occasion. I've got an 8500 now, a good running 5200 and a 655. Also have many of the older mid size saws. Got a 245 bow, 306A, and the Wizard version of the 306 w/bow. I've got a small collection of sand cast saws including a K model w/bow, 66 w/bow, and S72 w/straight bar. Also have some bigger Dolmars, a Mac 1000 and we were planning on bringing some two man saws. As you can see, it's a fairly major task deciding what to bring. Most of the time I tend to bring a lot more than I ever get to. That's why I thought I'd ask if anyone had any classes, thought that might help me to pare things down.

What all poulans fit the 80cc to 85cc or up to 89cc etc? IF I can make it unsure right now with my Sat's. I could put my 505 topend back on so one is there. Unless someone else has a 505 already they are bringing.

Oh then again if someone hasnt pulled that :dizzy: green rev limited coil out of the 505 it will run like chit anyways to compare to. Mine with a black coil 4 strokes into the 14K range now stock. :msp_thumbup:

Newest freebie

Just picked this up from a small engine shop. Squirted mix in the carb and it started. Replaced the line, in the tank, and got it running. I'll need the side cover and a muffler. Anyone have either?
