Kinda what I thought but they still put something on RR ties, don't know what it is though..

I may have missed the beginning of this.... But the tie factory by my house still uses creosote. I'm 99% sure.

On another note. I had this on the swap meet thread, but thought this may get me some actual results. I'm looking for a top end for a 3700 or a chome cylinder cman saw and can't seem to find one for trade. I have tons of poulan stuff, some husky, Mac, jred, and have access to a lot of old mag poulan stuff.

I would even take a whole nice case with cylinder, but I do have a few of them around already. Anyone have an extra?

What!?!?

Man.... How much was it? Toms 3.7 is an older style so I'm still looking.

Edit: Just looked it up.... 100 bones. That's a bit steep for me... Looking to part with parts more than pay. I have tons...;)

A nice collectable Poulan, but the BIN seems awfully high IMO.

RARE POULAN 76 LIMITED EDITION BICENTENNIAL SAW RARE | eBay

I'm certainly not going to buy it at that price. Just don't want one that bad. But, that one seems to be about the best condition I have ever seen for that model. Plus the manual & case to boot. The bar graphics are usually worn off, or one side of the decals on the saw are bad. So it might not be out of line to a collector. That really wants a good one.

Gregg,

Gregg,

Yeah, that one is in unusually good condition. Almost new. The clutch side decal is the one that is usually gone and it's in great condition. I have two and neither one has the clutch side decal or even remnants of it. It's just a shelf queen anyway so if you wanted one this is the one to buy.

I agree, hard to find in that condition and condition means a lot to a collector. It helps to have been there in 1976 to "get" it as well.

mine are definitely thin rings. ordered the new rings from parts tree using the craftsman no. can't say what the number is since i'm out of town for the early part of this week. guess i'll see when the rings come in. may have some thick rings for sale soon.

joy, the rings came in and were thin rings. here's some pix of the thin-ring, chrome piston, plain bore red, craftsman 3.7 (poulan 3700?). old ring in piston. pic taken before rings arrived. turns out the other ring gap matched the new ones. broke one of the "original" ones trying to put back together. done it several times before with a thin strip of plastic. pizzed me off so much i went and bought a plastic ring compressor tool. works great.

does anyone know where a 3/16" long reach allen type socket can be obtained that will actually fit through the holes in the cylinder? neither lowe's, sears, hf have one. for some reason they think the shaft should be bigger than the head, thus precluding insertion to the cylinder screws. got this problem with all of my pro-style saws that i've taken apart. always just torque the "h" out of it with the t-handle but would rather actually know i've torqued it to spec.
thinking about cutting the "t" off of my t-handle 3/16 and slapping a 3/16" socket on the end. would rather not have to sacrifice the t-handle but will if necessary. plus, not sure how easily that spring-steel t-handle will cut with a hacksaw.

Jerry that's a thick ring, chromed piston, bare bore, Poulan 3800 badged as a red Craftsman 3.7. Don't see many of those. The thin rings that we've been talking about are 1/2 the thickness of your rings. The cross section of the thick rings is almost 'square', while the cross section of the thin rings is more 'flat'........like this _.

This is why Mark said he hadn't seen "that combination" (meaning thin ring, chromed piston, plain bore) when you described your saw earlier.

Somebody posted a pic of their 3700/PP375 or 4000/PP395 piston here a while ago..........but I can't find the pics. You'd be able to see what the thin rings looked like if you saw that pic....

Here's Chris' completed 4000 P/C listing. You can see the thin rings in the pics...

okay, guess its easy to say my perception is/was totally off. also, i feel as if i might (as in DO for sure) owe some apologies to some of youse guys (mark). at the very least i gotta eat some of that crow. dayum that stuff tastes like.......crow. i just forgot to pay attention to the relevant part of one of my borrowed old sayings - "never believe anything you hear and only half of what you see". okay, i'm gonna go off to my hole now.

No need to go to your hole Jerry. Many of us have eaten crow here, and a few (myself included) have gone back for seconds....:cool2:

Jerry, if it is any consolation, that is a tiny faux pas compared to the ones I make. The kind gents here usually set us straight gently and even when they don't, forgive quickly. Keep posting your pics, please.

Al.
