This black bar in 041 mount on the 357 is a poulan 16" 3/8 050 60dl bar (replaceable sprocket nose). I actually made it to fit 095 too. I also have several 095 converted to run on poulan.

Thanks for the info.

I was running a 28" poulan sprocket nose bar on my 245A and it pulled it with ease in sugar pine, though it was a bit nose heavy, started with a 20 and it wanted a lot more.

Gonna buy a 28" for it. Got to clean it up and replace the lines, new carb kit.
It runs pretty good, but idles rough. Will post pics tonight!

Have a question about the Dayton 21". I know that this saw is a rebadged poulan 245a.
So what would be the biggest bar you can run GOOD with it?

Thank you guys!

The 245A will certainly handle a 28" bar. Most guys seem to run a 20". Me personally like a 24", A good compromise between the two.:msp_tongue: Just seems right to me. I would love to use it more than I do. Parts are a little scarce, so will generally use a newer Old Poulan for work. LOL
If I had several of them, I might be tempted to use it more. They are a great light weight saw for their age and size. 73+ cc.

Gregg,

Bad news and good news should have listen to Modified Mark

You know I think $25 is quite a bit for a set of rings also. On the other hand, that saw is over 30 years old, how long do you think its going to be easy to find every single part for it or any other 30 year old saw.

Old saws are fun but there a challange, and you need patiance for the parts to be found, if you really want them rings you may end up just getting them where you can find them and that sometimes means paying the price for them.

If you dont have that patiance or you really need that saw as your only one to cut wood, then maybe you should go buy a brand new one.

You will then have a factory warranty and a easy parts supply. The other thing is that to get a saw today to match the quality of the old Poulan you will have to spend alot of money to do so.

Good luck...

You warned me about ordering on line but I didn't listen. Ordered gasket and set of rings, got gasket immediately but they said rings were backordered. After 10 days got nervous and made some calls after a bit of questioning Husqvarna, said the rings were no longer available. They were real nice and offered no help but finally refunded my money. I then started calling saw shops in my area. Finally found an older gentleman 30 miles away, that's not only has the rings but some other Poulan parts going there next day or two. Says the rings are $14 plus tax per set. Sounds like a winner was just about to order the $25 set and just eat crow. Any way thanks for the warning "MM" next time I listen better and just do as told. Then again they don't call me "dumbarky" for nothing.

****** questions not necessarily specific to Poulan

First, can I use an adjustable spanner wrench for a clutch removal on an S25? Never removed a clutch before and am not about to buy special tools for each of my eight different vintage (70's-80's) saws that I got for cheap or nothing. I did some reading and heard about spanner wrenches. It looks like my S25 which runs great is sloppy on the sprocket and I need a new chain anyway. How much should I pay for a new sprocket and where should I get it?
Next ****** question: Am I safe to try spraying gumout into the carb throat (while trying to crank) of a saw that has been laying with gas for many years before taking the carb apart?
Thanks,
Larry

For the second part of your question, no, I wouldn't spray gumout or anything else in the carb. You could put a little fuel mix in the carb to see if it will start though. I don't imagine gumout or other sprays have any lubrication that the engine needs.

Thanks, Palmer.

I appreciate the logical response. I guess I'll take them apart.

655 pro parts

Just picked this up not to long ago and figured it was time to start in on it... I know it's a long shot but if you poulan boys happen to have a few spare parts laying around for my 655pro shoot me a PM. I'm going to collect the parts I need a do a rebuild/refurb this winter. Mostly missing air intake parts a break handle and an outer bucking spike. what you see in the pics below is all I have... I'll list in the swap meet thread too but not everyone makes it over to that thread.

Thanks guys!

Hi,
I have a Sears 3.4/20 358.598370, is it possible to obtain a PDF copy of the owners manual

That model # doesn't seem to compute on Sears Parts website. Usually you input your model number at this site and it will show the IPL and sometimes offer the OM. Recheck you model # number and try it. If you can't get it to work you might just get the Poulan equivalents.

Nate, I don't have those parts, but I thought I seen some of what your after on ebay the other day. You need 2 spikes, those little ones let it nose dive. I got the big ones on mine and I can pattern them for you. Might be able to cut em out sometime as well.

3400 won't stay running

Got a friend's 3400 that they were having trouble with. I pulled the carb, put it through about 15 cycles in the ultrasonic cleaner, replaced the diaphragms and gaskets, set the fuel lever, it was WAY high, put everything back together and it will fire with the choke on, and will start with the choke off, but will die as soon as you pull the trigger. Gaskets and diaphragms are in correctly, and fuel line wasn't pinched, and filter is clean. I had the adjustment needles turned out until they were wobbly, and it made no difference. Any ideas????:bang:

That don't sound good. These should start and run pretty good, without much adjustment needed at exactly ONE turn out from seated, on both H & L screws.

Mine is the same model and the PN is stated on the front of the owner's manual. I think the numbers may be different for the ones sold in Canada

MAPaul, If you want to PM me your your e-mail address I will send you the IPL, owner's manual and repair manual for the 3400

Tim

Metering lever is level with the carb body?.

Any chance you put the carb to adaptor gasket on upside down so it's blocking the impulse passage?

Yep, metering lever is level, it was really high, and had to lower it.
Impulse line is open, too.
