My Poulans

I just thought I'd show my Poulan collection. I never thought I'd own one but have become a big fan of them. The 4000 I got from Brad already ported and running fantastic. The 245A came from Michigan and now runs great. I just have to take it out and run it almost every time I cut. The XXV just came from Michigan, too, as a Christmas present from my Dad. It's really clean on the inside and what little I've run it, I'm impressed. You can also see I don't own any more Stihl's, is that normal?

You guys were asleep on the $22 brand new Oregon Pro lite 16" .325 pitch bar in K041 mount as well.

Red saws

I went to buy a three red saw package today, two little guys and and a VI922. The guy was asking $100. He also had a 3400 that was not for sale but did not run. We talked a while about what great saws they were and I mentioned I had a few Poulans. He bought that one new quite a while ago.
He offered the red ones to me for free if I would fix up his 3400 and get it running. He thought it has a scored piston but it does not so it should go with fuel system repairs and maybe crank seals if they are bad. He had the low and high screws out more than two turns each.
Other than the 2 lbs of oiliy saw cake on it, it's a really nice 3400. Chain brake model.

Thanks to you guys for sharing your endless expertise with me and making it possibkle to get this really good deal!
It also gives me a chance to hone my meager skills.

Hi Tim,

I love my Super Mini very little use. I haven't got my XL923 ,82.1cc beastie running yet but should very soon. Picking up an XL76 soon paid all of $20.00 for it. I seem to have fallen into Homlites but would also like to get a nice old Poulan.

Regards,

Lee:clap:

Nice scores. Was that bar black with the Poulan Pro logo. Saw that one...:D

I picked up an NOS 20" Poulan Pro labeled Oregon replaceable sprocket nose .058G bar a couple months ago for something like $11 shipped. It looks like a D096 Homelite/etc bar, but with oiler channels from the adjuster holes to the bar groove (in addition to the separate oiler holes). I think it's a D007 mount. Has a 3/8" slot. Was a 'too good to pass up' impulse buy.

The guy sold at least a half dozen of them, along with a bunch of chains for them (in bags). Some of them he sold as bar/chain sets. Somebody got one of THOSE for something like $12 shipped. Forgot to set my snipe on that one....:msp_rolleyes:

No Aaron the bar I got was just Oregon Pro Lite badged. Still a good deal for a working saw!

Yeah I'm betting your bar is a D007 mount but thats no biggie on a 20" as I think they were a 70DL chain but I could be mistaken on that one. .058 gauge is why I didnt bid on them.

What PP saw would that D007 bar have been intended for? I think you're right on the DL count for it. IIRC I tried a .050G 70DL loop on it and it had six DL hanging off at the tail (like my other 70DL bars). I don't run much .058G chain right now, so that bar will probably sit for a while.

It would have been intended for the Pioneer based saws like the 655 and others.

I'm laughing pretty darn hard right now!

(Sorry about that Mike)

That's alright........youens go ahead and have your fun!!!LOL
Just remember when the shoe is on the other foot that it is all fun and games 'til someone gets hurt!

Actually, I DO live in downtown Franklinton, Kentucky. It is just so small that they closed our post office about 25 years ago and merged us with the neighboring community of Pleasureville!

Mike

Youall remember where you are talking about!!!
This IS rural Kentucky folks.
You know, heart of the Bible belt and all. No in this case "merged" means "youall ain't got enough money to keep the post office open so now you are gonna have to drive to Pleasureville to mail anything".

At least you *have* a downtown... My hometown (Olalla, Wa) was so small nobody lived in town besides the storekeeper/postmaster... (P.O. started inside the store, then moved to the building extending over the water...)

'Course in our case the surrounding community was large enough that the P.O. was eventually moved to a (much larger) location outside the 'official' town limits... (didn't find a pic of the actual Olalla P.O. but this one is from the same 'Government Ugly' template...)

BTW, your avatar reminds me of our local Santa, albeit a 'sleigh' of a different color... (pity it's McCormick Red instead of A.C. Orange like yours... *g*)

Now if it would just warm up a bit so I could get back to work on the project saw pile, or at least the Poulan/Craftsman portion...

what i learned today

Tried to fire up the 25CVA yesterday. First it had no spark. The points were corroded. Now I had a weak spark. New plug. Good spark. The saw would start if you choked it, pulled once and then opened choke, pulled again. If it caught it would only run if you could get it to WOT. It won't idle down. Turning the jets had very little effect.

So today I took the carb apart again. Soaked it in carb cleaner. Double checked gasket orientations. Readjusted fuel metering needle. Blew out the fuel passages with compressed air. Reassembled. Saw would now start and run. The H jet actually did something. It still won't idle down properly.

Took carb apart again. Turns out one of the three low speed jets was totally clogged to the point i didn't know it was there. It was hidden under the small internal gasket in a WA-19 carb (no welsh plugs in this carb). Blew it out well. Reassemble everything again.

Saw fired up and actually idled. I was able to adjust everything pretty easily. Made few cuts in a 12" oak long. Nice running saw overall. Now a buddy already wants to trade for it. :)

One question: Is it normal for fuel to weep through the duckbill check valve in the fuel cap?

Overall opinion of saw: IT NEEDS SPIKES!

In my experience, if the cap is weeping (when there's a known good duckbill in place), the duckbill isn't fully seated. This can be because there's still some leftover mung from the previous duckbill in the cap, or the star washer isn't seated all the way down. One of my caps does this every once in a while. The cap bore where the duckbill and star washer live is chewed up by the star washer..........and doesn't retain the star washer very well. When it starts weeping, I use a tiny screwdriver to push down all of the 'points' of the washer and it holds fine again for a while. Will probably change out caps on that saw today (and transfer the good duckbill over). Tired of messing with it, and I have some 'spare' caps.
