any idea what caused the initial failure?

I just shortened a damaged chain with no adverse effects if that is any consolation. it cuts fine.

As with many things, I haven't got a clue what caused it. Judging the guy that I got it from, he may have tried to brush his teeth with it.
I would have expected to see damaged cutters or drivers but all is well. I don't know if the straps are heat teated but if so, it may be from a batch that was too hard. The fractures look brittle as there is no elongation at the fracture. (Sorry, the drunken metallurgist in me talking)

Would that be the drunken part or the metallurgist part???

poulan 252 gear drive

I finally picked up that Poulan 252 gear drive chainsaw today. I was looking at it a wile back and got a lot of help from this forum about it in my first post.View attachment 273885View attachment 273886 It has a 28" McCulloch bar with virtually no wear at all on it, that I might trade or sale it if I come across a comparable Poulan bar. I'm looking for a few more 1/2" pitch chain's for it now, even with worn down tip's, since the 1/2" pitch is only getting harder to find, I'm planning to make a carbide tip chain just for the hell of it. Tomorrow I will open up the saw and check out its inside's, might make a youtube vid on that if anyone is interested.

5200 Spark Issues (Really no spark issues)

Good eveniing: I have been unable to get spark on my 5200. I have cleaned everything I could think of, switch on/off and disconnected even tried an oldtimer's tip of heating up the coil in an oven. So far no luck. If I can tap into your expertise:

How often are used electronics found on ebay or through another (but fiscally responsible) source?

Anyone know how to get that "well done electronic" smell out of a toaster oven? I have about a 30 minute time frame to make that happen or getting the saw to run may be the least of my problems!

Thanks Frank

They show up occasionally but are usually a bit pricey.
I don't think you are supposed to get them hot enough to smoke.
My suggestion is for you to put a couple slices of bread and a pat of cheese in there and turn it up on high.
Go back in around a half hour and start cleaning up the mess.
You will still be in trouble, but it will be a LOT easier to explain the stink of burned grilled cheese than the stink of fried ignition parts.

5200 Spark Issues

As it turns out I am a heck of a concerned husband and father.

During regular use (wink) the toaster oven seemed to malfunction somewhat and not wanting to put anyone at risk, I did the right thing and replaced it. (Man it stinks)

Win win. Well except the saw doesn't run and I used some of my Christmas gift card on a stupid toaster oven. Jeeze

Thanks for your suggestions!

congrats! You now own a bonafide shop dedicated toaster oven!

You merely have to purchase a brand new clean one and leave it to cooking duties only. No need or hidng the smell then! Much easier, too, that old nasty chemical smell aint going away any time soon. Plus all that old plastic had PCBs and so on in it..I wouldnt eat outta that thing again. Aint worth 30 bucks to me for that.

Old timers trick of heating the coil is most likely bogus. Over heating is what kills coils, it dont make them better.

Check to see if you have continuity down the spark plug wire from the coil. Youll have to get to both ends somehow, remove old wire, or poke a tiny hole at the bottom etc, and run your multimeter on ohms setting. Check up inside the boot and make sure the wire is actually attached! Ive seen that before, guys yank on them by the cords instead of properly using the boot and twist and pull a little. I get this more or less all the time with the meatheads my boss hires. I wind up fixing what they break. Whats worse is fixing what they broke then tried to fix themselves...

in fact I would wager just a ton of alleged bad coils are actually yanked on plug wires that are
broken. Sure coils can and do go bad, just saying, running 10 to 1 with me (some large number) what I see, most just broken wires when there is no spark at the plug.

here is the 4200 that a very kind member let us know about. the saw is in better shape than i thought it would be in.

Welcome

Just making your pic bigger.

Did you pull the flywheel and make sure you have no bare wires grounding out under the hold down straps?

Very nice shape and a good deal if I remember right. Is it a runner?

2 working chain saws any help on what model this is I know it's a counter vibe serial number is b1922516

I'll stick my neck out there and guess its a PP375.:) From what I have been able to gather, the 395 would most likely have a gray colored air filter/top cover, the 375 black. Not 100% sure of that.
Plus, it seems there are many more 375's out there than 395's. Just a guess on my part. Either way they are desirable saws.

Gregg,

Gregg,

Gregg I think your right about the color difference on them.

There was also a PP385 in the mix as well but I dont think I have ever seen one.
