Like someone else says the IPLs at Poulan Pro show 164 and 137 carbs for different saws but the carbs all carry the same part #.
I would be surprised if ordered today that a 137 wouldnt show up.

I had sent an email to walbro a while back asking what the diff was between the 137 and 164. I was told the 164 replaces the 137 which was now obsolete, and the 164 was listed for 54cc and 60cc, the 137 for 60cc Poulans. I was looking for a little more in depth info but as usual didn't get it.

You did Gregg and I still have it, just like when you sent it home with me. My whole idea was to swap it onto my 60cc PP365 to see how it worked instead of the small original HDA49 that is on it. I had good intentions at least. :hmm3grin2orange:

I still want to try it.

Kevin, your free to do whatever works for you. As for 3/8s being that much faster bucking? I aint buying it. Like I said, Mike and I tested and it was a very small difference.

Sometime ago on my own I tried both 72LPX with a 7 tooth against 20LPX 8 tooth both on my stock 60cc PP365. I used that one because I knew it wouldnt be lacking for power with either and I had bars and sprockets to make the test for that saw.

No stopwatch used, just me and a 20" log and I really couldn't say one was faster then the other. If it takes a stopwatch to tell the difference, your wasting your time worrying about it.

You really prefer 3/8's and thats fine but I aint buying what your selling on it being much faster.

I am thinking it might show up more. 3/8ths hanging in there sharper, therefore cutting better, in a full afternoon of bucking.

but...I dont know either.

I think some people would argue with themselves for the sake of arguing. :msp_blink::msp_rolleyes: :cheers:

Heck Boys,
Run what you like.
That's why they make chocolate......................AND vanilla!!!!

I like Single Malt Scotch, the piston and rod are back together. I said more 4 letter words and even remembered some I had forgotten before it went back together. That little dowel trick worked too. Thanks...........

I am drinking some fine 18 year old Glenfiddich (little celebration) as I read this thread. If I was closer I'd argue the merits of 3/8" and .325" too, but I fear it would only be the liquor talking. Love the banter though.:msp_biggrin:

Thanks guys for all the input on the HDA164/137 situation.....

They just act wierd, like the the saws got a air leak, wont idle down etc. Just goofy like.

Thanks for posting that. I got mine repaired under warranty at no charge. The shop ordered the carb straight from the PP330 IPL and like yours it arrived as a 137 carb, not the 164 shown on the IPL.

That's exactly what this one is doing Mark. Runs fine for about 30 seconds......then it won't run unless the choke is in the 'half cock' almost closed detent............and the next minute it's running so rich that it will continue to run with the H needle almost completely closed with no change (like as if the needle/seat isn't seating or the metering lever is set super high).......and then won't restart without the choke back at that same almost-closed detent...:bang:

Dangit I just rebuilt this carb. Set the lever right, replaced the screens, had it in the bath in the USC for a WEEK while I waited for the kit to come in (giving it many cycles anytime I was in the shop). Boot looks good. Crank seals are fine. Impulse hose is new. Sealed up the jug with Threebond 1194 when I replaced the ring (for $3 why not?) and eliminated the base gasket (and did a muffler mod while I was waiting for backordered AV buffers and other bits). Squish measured out at .030" without the gasket. I need to make up blockoff plates for this saw so I can do a pres/vac test. I'd be surprised if I actually have a vac leak here though. Thinking I need to order a carb.

More waiting. The damn parts I'd ordered took six weeks to get here (and they canceled the boot and shorter 3500 spike as they were suddenly 'NLA' supposedly). I HATE ordering from places that deal with third party drop shippers. Will reorder the spike somewhere else, and will probably get a boot (and the carb) at the same time. I really wanted to change out the boot while I had the saw apart, as I didn't really enjoy putting it back together. Not a fan of that boot setup or the kill switch wires/impulse hose routing....

I put a .325 pitch rim on this saw (7 pin for now....may try an 8 pin someday). Modified a Husqvarna branded 20" K095 mount .325 pitch Powermatch for it (cut the oil channels from the adjuster holes to the groove and filed the stud slot a scosh as it was TIGHT on the studs). Oils great. Put on a loop of 21BPX (or whatever # the .058G BPX chain is). This will be a limbing and larger bucket saw for me. My first use of .325 pitch chain on any of my larger than 41cc saws. Got plenty of other saws to grab for felling and bucking. Biggest stuff this saw will see much of will be 18" or less oak, madrone, doug fir, or maple. Mostly it'll be cutting much smaller wood.

Oh and Allan.........................some Jameson for me tonight (was a 'thank you' gift from a friend for fixing his Browning A-5). Thinking about a cigar......but it's too close to bedtime for that...

Aaron, we have Jamieson here too - I can't fault your selection. I haven't had a cigar for more than two years and still yearn for one every night. Use to smoke a lovely Dutch cigar called Villieger - happiest 30 minutes (well, nearly:msp_wink:) of the day they were.
And dear me, our autoloaders were taken away from us by a zealous Prime Minister about fifteen years ago. I shoot a Perazzi MX8 these days but would give anything for an auto again. Had a beaut shoot the other evening - I took seven teal and four blacks pass shooting through some old red gums along a flooded lagoon in about ten minutes. Reckon I would have cracked twenty with my old Remington 1100.:msp_wink:\Skol!

Aaron, what is the year of that saw? Just wondering.

Unfortunately Mark, I don't know. All of the decals on the tank (EPA decal, etc) are missing. Just some glue where they once were. The decals on the CC and flywheel cover are fine....

I remember seeing the pictures of grapples lifting large wads of A-5's and such and swinging them into the furnace. Heartbreaking. We're rapidly cathcing up with you folks I'm afraid. You probably can understand how damn hard it was to give that A-5 back after I got it running again. Hadn't handled one of those in ages. This one was a Light Twelve. It was a Mirroku (Japan) made Browning rather than an older FN made gun. If it was an FN made gun I don't know if I'd have had the strength to let it go...:D

The original small spike is NLA and has been for a few years, I have a used one from a PP336 I'll send ya. I think I still have your address from the 5/16-24 sst nuts I sent you for your saws, but you better send it again.
The 330,3450 run a .325 8 pin on a 18" really well. Try it.

Thanks my friend! Will PM in a sec. The 530027184 still shows up as being available on a few sites (including the site sponsor that later 'canceled' that part along with a couple others that are still listed elsewhere such as the PP330 intake boot). A month and a half ago when I ordered that spike and other parts, it was still listed on the more popular Poulan parts sites, but they now show it as being NLA. I wonder if the places that still show it as being available really have them....................or if they're like the folks I placed my order with and they'll be saying "sorry, it's no longer availble" several weeks after the order....

I will for sure try the 8 pin rim on my PP330. I went with the 7 pin simply because the 20" bar is what came to me in a trade and I wanted to be sure that the saw would pull it if I had to 'burry the bar'. If it'll run that 20" bar with authority (when 'burried') with the .325-8 rim I will be very impressed. Will try it out sometime after I get this misbehaving saw sorted out and get some hours on that new ring.

I find this all the time with Poulan parts that are NLA. One site will show obsolete and another site shows available. They never have it. I now will contact the company and ask if they actually have it in stock before I order it and the usual answer is no its obsolete and they are going to update their site.

Why not put double spikes on that 330? I *lightly* modified a set of Husqvarna spikes (slotted one hole for the case mounting and shortened and then drilled one hole for bar studs) and it works great. Mark has the pattern from my saw and it only takes 10 min tops.
