Picked up this Craftsman/Poulan for $20. Dated '88. What Poulan is this? 3000 possibly? It will be a runner.

ModifiedMark and others on this thread

Mark, that Poulan 6000 that was in my neck of the woods never materialized, what I mean to say is I sent many replies to the seller with no answer back.Frustrating!

I know from reading a bit on this thread that some would say Poulan never made a bad saw ie.WildThing.
But please enlighten me as to when they quit making a good Pro Saw.I am familiar with how good the Poulan Pros were that were based on the large size Pioneer frames. What about ones after that?
Thanks
Lawrence

Mark can fill ya in better than me, but I would say many of the Poulan Pro models, like the 325, 330, 335, 365, 380 etc. are pretty good saws, that will compare to most any other manufacturer of a slightly newer design. I won't swear to it, but I think the 325 is a Jonsered design. I like my Super 380 just fine, its a 60cc saw, same as the 365.

Larry, that bites on the 6000 I know how that is, I have a Allis Chalmers saw within 2 miles of me and I just cannot get up with the guy to get it yet!

Now as to your question after the Pioneer based saws came the Partner/Jonersed based saws as well as the Poulan designed saws as well.

Basically to me, if it is a split cased saw with a bolt on cyl and says Poulan Pro then that is a good saw! Maybe not the most top notch "pro saws" in every area, but good saws with good value.

I will say the 330 which seems to be the last of them was produced to 2007. Seems the Poulan designed ones topped out at 60cc.

Now there are other "green" Poulan saws that were produced at the same time that share most of what the Poulan Pros had also but some of that is confusing also. "Most" of the green versions had chrome pistons and bare cyls, but not all did. Some green ones also had the chrome bores making them virtully the same as the Poulan Pros.

So even if they were bare cyls they had the metal split case, bolt on cyls, gear drivin oilers and such and to me were considered "good" saws.

Some model numbers are the Poulan Pro 305 335 336 365 330 380 while some of the green versions are the 2700 2800 3000 3300 3450 3750.

The rest of the small newer Poulans are what they are, a cash cow for Husqvarna. No big sticking up for the Wild Thing and such for me, I just think they get a bum rap from alot of snobs on this board, as at least when compared to the Asian Macs, Homelites and Blue Max type saws, there actually not that bad then.

At least there able to be decent for the part timer when muffler modded and retuned. There made in the USA, service dealers are everywhere, parts are cheap, warranty is good etc.

Thanks Mark and Gregg

Thanks to Gregg for the picture and to let Mark add his very informative reply on the Poulans.

Mark I am going to save that information you have posted, it might come in handy one day!
Thanks for taking the time to respond!

No problem, remember the last part is my opinion, and lots may disagree.

While you out searching, remember I would be interested if you happen on any older Cannuck Poulans. The orange ones with the chainbrakes that were never sold here. Any of the 3700 4000 or such saws.

Two Fer Tuesday

Thanks to a couple of members here I had a nice welcome when I got home yesterday.

A nice pair of 25's.

Joe and I made a deal on that nice early model S25DA and Moss Man sent me this nice early light colored 25.

There in the spot in the project line for now but when I catch up it wont take much to get them both in tip top shape.

The 25 will keep its 1/4 pitch chain and probably not get used much but the S25 will get a 3/8's lp setup and get used from time to time.

Poulan Lovers GTG

Some of us Green saw lovers are planning for a Poulan GTG, Saturday May 1st. at my place here in Ohio. Anyone is welcome to pitch a tent or get a motel if you don't want to drive home late, after running saws, and BS'ing into the evening over a few cold ones. LOL

Ive got a number of white & red oak logs we can play with. Should be a great opertunity to see & run some dandy, older, green iron.:)

MoparMike & ModifiedMark will be there!! That in itself is worth the trip!
Lots of old Poulan knowledge right there.

Will have something to eat also, burgers, dogs, brats, pop, etc..Maybe Nik (Fatguy) will bring some CHEESE...LOL

Anyone that wants to attend, just send me a PM, and I'll get ya some directions.

Gregg,

Mystery saw confirmed

Down to 2 at least. Either a 2.8 or 3.3. I picked this craftsman up last week. Complete but NO ID on it. Just a Sears Mod#. Went on the site tonight and I must say I am impressed. Not only did I find the saw and manual, but I was able to order all the parts I need too. The intake boot was broke in half, so i had bad feelings when I saw that, but both sides are shiny. Comp is good as is spark. tore it down tonight, pretty clean under 3 lbs of crap. This must be the first of the "newer Poulans", its dated '88, I think I have one 3.7 thats an '87. pics when its done.
