The STIHLS! IMAGINE THAT:bowdown:

I don`t have anything negative to say about Stihl chainsaws, they have been great dependable saws for me and helped me make a living. Most any brand would have done the job but Stihl was what was in our area, they were avaliable and so were parts and stuff like chains, files and PPE. I have run a few of almost every make of saws and can find good things about them all and of course there are little things I like about any model of saw that makes it suite me better than others. That is just personal likes, not big on dissing any makers saws.

I like them all too Jerry it's just that Stihl always seems to be there in the end.

The 4200 pistons and rings can still be ordered from Poulan along with the 5200 rings.

I would be shocked if the cyls can still be orderd from Sears. I may just have to try that.
Those saws you seen, the 306's are Jerrys.

Mark, if you find that they are still available, please let me know as well.

If I could find a piston for it too...I could bump my 4900 up from 77 to 85cc's.

Thanks,

Flint.

Great looking saws Jerry:clap:
I love seeing oldies like that in great shape, just like they were used in the day. Kinda like finding a 60"s muscle car, in great un-restored condition, sitting in someones garage or barn. To top it off, they were you, and your Dads saws..I don't think I would ever part with those either.

Gregg,

Jerry,
Would you happen to know what years that style Oregon bar on the upper saw in your picture was used or from? Just curious, I have been using one like that on one of my 4000's. I was guessing 70's-80's, but maybe they aren't that old.

Gregg,

That bar would be around mid 80`s when put on as both of the saws were retired from active duty. Now the bar might not have been a current model at that time as the dealer we bought parts from always had a lot of old stock parts in the store. I think I have the same bar on a Jonsered 2094 that the previous owner stated ,it came with the saw when he bought it new from a dealer in his area. When I was discussing the saw with some of the other AS members the bar came up in the conversation and it was thought it would have been from the mid to late eighties. I am sure someone here with more knowledge on the Oregon bars will show up and set us straight.

As you can tell my dads saw got more use than mine did and even after we retired them I would catch him occasionally running it on some small clearing project. The racket them saws make with next to no muffler left was deafening but dad was a tough old coot and it was hard for him to give up on anything.
I vividly remember one time we were on firefighting detail cutting a fireline ahead of a wildfire and were nearly finished when a lick of flame rushed through ahead of the main fire, dad was half way through the tree he was dropping and his saw caught fire. It was his 1110 Pioneer and most would have chucked it away but he just calmly took off his hat and swatted the fie out and continued with the cut till the tree fell. The rest of us were beating a retreat but I held back until he caught up to me, just then the 1 1/2" water line ruptured directly under me and knocked me end over end into the brush but I quickly got my feet under me and we both beat a more hasty retreat. LOL

3.7

Usually I post just a finished product but since the 3400 4000 saws seem to be getting a lot more press I figured I'd share some partially torn down pics of my 3.7 I'm doing now. Like others have said, one of the easiest saws to work on. I always fold that top handle forward to get the hood off. This is as far as this one is getting apart. Its another low hour saw, almost no wear. P/C look new and no carbon on the ex. port. Thats the only reason I pulled the jug on my 4000. It was caked up bad. It has a 3/8" rim and after discussing bars with my buddy Mike, Ive been advised a 20" will be a nice fit. I even have the orig 'banana' bar. The only upgrade is the 4000 muffler. But I might swap the Modifed Mark Muffler from the 4000 to the 3.7 and put this muffler back to the 4000. Mark says his muffler really woke up his 3.7. This one will be a work saw. It also had the powersharp, the top button was missing, I took the rest off as it only catches crud.

Thanks Jerry! Your probably right on the mid-late 80"s on that style bar.
The newer style Power Match bar where the tip is attached is probably stronger design, but it seems to work well for me, and I like the looks of it..LOL

Gregg,

Jerry and Gregg, I like that style Orgeon bar next time I see one Im scooping it.

They are quite striking looks wise, I know I have more of them on other saws around here somewhere but can`t find any picts right now. They are a good bar as far as wear goes also, had them on many of the saws from the late 70`s through the eighties.

Thats gonna be a sweet looking Craftsman 3.7 Joe!! Dern near as nice as your first one.
My craftsman 3.7 is kind of a well worn, dull red look to it..lol

Gregg,

Thats the problem! I get obsessive cleaning these saws. I cant help it. I see pics guys post some times and I cringe. Pulling a jug without cleaning real good is asking for trouble. And why wouldnt you? the saw runs cooler, better, less chance for dirt getting sucked in. Plus it looks good. The other 3.7 really is a new saw, I have used it, Id say its still not broken in and thats the truth. This one I will use. It will pair up nice with my 16" Dolmar PS540.
