Thanks to Joe, I got another great 4000 here now. I really wasn't after another 4000 but decided I cant let Gregg have them all. :hmm3grin2orange:

He told me it needed a little bit so I tore it apart today and gave it the once over. It needed a crank seal for sure but its all back together now and running like a good 4000 is suppose to.

I put a 24" bar and chain on it to give it a shake down and it walked the dog with it.

Mark that saw looks great and I love the bar you have on it. I would love to find one like it.

I bought the clutch cover separate, that 4000 had a regular plastic cover on it. Those covers are a bit heavy but super constructed and it has 2 adjustment built into it.
$400 for that saw in 84 was a good deal. Alot of the competition were still selling saws designed in the 60s
Mark is the third owner. It was purchased at Gauvin power equipment Grafton mass USA.
Saw is Bruce Springsteen cover is Bryan Adams.

That explains it now. The saw has the lower handle brace for a wider plastic cover as it has a bit more bow to it to match the wider plastic.

I had to adjust the brake on it yesterday as the jumpy chain actually tripped it a couple times. Not sure if I got it adjusted right but I think I have the instructions from Poulan on those and will look at it later.

I'm not crazy about these brakes, like you say they add a lot of weight to the saw. If someone had a near mint 4000 cover I could maybe be convinced to trade...

Look closer at that bar, its been around the block a few times. Yeah it sits up with that bar but it don't take much to make it nose over.

Just wanted to see the power of this one with a 24" on it, as I aint run one in a while now.

My first 4000 came from the PNW with a 28" on it. No doubt it done very well with it in that soft wood that they have up there. :hmm3grin2orange:

BTW you got a package coming this week...

Thanks for the package Mark. Did the envelope make it to you yet? I'll ignore the 'soft wood' comment.:D

That bar has taken several hundred less trips around the block than the 24" bar that's on my 4000 right now.:msp_thumbup:

Is Joe Salva (or anyone else) making 4000 clutch cover decals? I have a really nice metal 3400 clutch cover I'd trade for that brake type cover. My current 4000 cover is plastic and far from 'near mint'.

Diaphragm material

I made up a diaphragm today for the 3700 oil pump and it pumps oil. I agree with Bob in saying it pumps a lot of oil.
I ran the saw both with a 20" bar and chain and also with the clutch off (thanks for the warning guys) to watch the oil flow. It does not pump oil when at idle. I will have cut some wood to see how much oil it is using up.
I am glad that I don't have to manually pump that saw anymore.

Have any of you besides Bob tried to make one up and test it?

I think Joe has this decals.

Your ignoring the soft wood remark? Spoilsport......

Oh yeah the envelope did show up. ..

If you don't want much oil on your bar and chain a new Stihl would be perfect.

Well the ole blind hog found another one :msp_thumbup:

The bad is it needs a little work. Piston and cylinder are good, but it has a piece broke out of the crank case that holds the coil on.

Justin, I hope you have that broken piece. We know a guy who can fix that. !

Barring that a 6900, 7700 or 8500 is the only donor for that one. If nothin else the top end is a good find. Just don't let Gary get a good of it again. Lol.

Well shucks! No i didn't even look for the piece, but I doubt it is there. :msp_sad: I sent a message to Gary thinking that set of NOS cases would work that I sold him in Ohio. Oh well it aint eatin' nothin', so I'll have it here if and when I do find a case half. :)

They would work if you wanted to build a 54000 out of it but the 8500 top cover won't work on them. ..

I would rather not make this into a CV series variant. In a day or two, i'll take it apart and clean everything up real good and have it ready for when I find a case half for it. :)

Would a 5400 clutch cover fit my 8500? Such as one with a brake in it?

Yes it would. Depending on the 5400 and if it had 5/16" studs or 3/8 would maybe mean having to drill out the cover for the 3/8" studs on the 8500.

If you really want a chainbrake on it, I suggest get one of the NOS cover kits from Bryce on ebay. They come with the stud that bolts to the case to support the rear of the cover which is needed.

Picked these up today. Not sure what I'll do with the 306A just yet. Might tinker with it and run it a bit.

2500, anyone want it? PM with offer. I've already got a bigger version of it in that series, don't need this one. It needs some work, but is in good shape, lots of compression. Also needs a screw put in the handle bottom where you place your boot to ground start it.
