I'm wondering how far people would drive for a GTG and how much it would take to set one up. I know a place, near Somerset, PA that would work out real nice.ChipsFlyin, anytime you want to cut let me know,
Looks real nice! Where you get the dawg? Repainted? I have been thinking about buffing or at least shining up the 141 muffler. Seeing yours all nice and shiny makes the decision easy.Getting there on the 401A

Refresh my old brain. What saw are they for and where do they go.Man- those 12-24's hex are the hardest screws to find unless you want to buy a crap load. I see Fastenal has them on their site and really hope the local branch has them in stock.
361 style saw: flywheel cover - 1 5/8" and 5/8" length, dawg - 5/8" legnth , rt side of gas tank- 3/4", muffler - 1" and the handle- 7/8" length. The 141A that I got has the complete wrong screws in the flywheel cover. Fortunately they were smaller so I think the threads are OK. I'm also going to check today at Fastinal if the have 10-24 and 12-24 fillister's for future ref.Refresh my old brain. What saw are they for and where do they go.
Cool what is it?
Sort of the same effect on a saw if done right. I have seen 20%-23% gains just doing a muffler mod on 290-390 saws. Those are the worst restricted with best gains.
Hey guys! Hadn't been on here in a little while. Life got busy and in the way and time on here got back-burnered. Took me a few days to catch up on the 100 or so pages that passed since my last read thread....whew. Glad to see some of you old guys back around, some of you still here, and some new ones talking too. I've added a few to my collection over the past few months, but my most recent is this one I finally got from my uncle yesterday. Hadn't been ran in about 15 years or so probably. Only thing I can find wrong with it aside from needing a new bar is the cracked clutch cover...and a serious cleaning. Def won't effect how it'll run once gone through. Won't hear me complaining for a freebie. heheheView attachment 402139 View attachment 402140

Wouldn't hear me complain either!! Its a plus also that it came from a family member. Don't know if you had a 4000 before or not, but your gonna like it when ya get through with it. They are my favorite all around saw.
Was funny, Sunday, my sister & her boyfriend were back at the woods cutting some dead Ash trees. Earlier in the day, I used the tractor to plow a path through the snow, all the way to the woods, so they could get back there. Any way, later in the day I came outside to do something, and heard his 4000 singing in the woods. That 4000 I put together for him, out of spare parts, has a muffler on it that has holes drilled in the front. One of my early "lazy mans" muffler mods.
That saw is louder than any of my 4000's, and I gotta say that was one sweet sound from a distance! Don't think I ever heard a Poulan running & cutting wood without being the one running it. LOL That saw sounded awesome!
Gregg,
Here is a pic of the muffler, LOL It is MUCH louder than exiting through the side. I posted pics of this thing before.
I put this saw together out of various parts I had around I could cobble together. Started out just making a 3400 for him. After I got it together, I changed my mind and swapped a 4000 P/C on it that I had. Most of the parts are 3400, Craftsman crankcase, old style rear handle I drilled out to take the hex & screw setup. I had a spare 4000 clutch cover I was saving, but used that. So I can't offer that for your 4000.
Was a loop of old Vangaurd chain I had, I put on it at first, but later ordered him a couple loops of LGX, thats what he uses on it now. So far the 3400 recoil seems to be holding up well. Not a pretty saw, and would confuse the heck out of somebody coming across it for sale or something..LOL

Yup, three 5/16" holes in line with the exhaust port and remove part of the deflector. Fifteen minutes well spent.
Had a few minutes tonight and started doing the fuel lines on the 3400 for my dad.

Call me stupid but where does the cut end on the vent line go? I couldn't find it in the repair manual.
