Is this a muffler mod on a 3400 base? I picked it up with some parts I got

It would be my guess that it is a modded muffler. One I did on a 3400 looks just like that. The opening is a little more rounded than the factory side outlet, seen on 4000's & 375's etc. They look more squared off.

Here is one I did by cutting a slot, then doing some bending.

Gregg,

That's exactly what I did in my 3400 Gregg. Worked good and was easy. That's what I'm thinking of doing to the 3800 as well.

nice looking saw. I have one also. I need to take a good look at the muffler. Can't remember what it looks like. Getting old sucks but beats the alternative. Your hand guard is MIA?
That is old school for sure. Not as good as a brake but could save some fingers on a kickback.

Thanks picked it up a couple weeks ago. That's a really nice saw you have too. Muffler is essentially the same as the 3400 if I remember right.
The hand guard is missing but the screws are there and it doesn't look to me like it's ever had a guard on there. Unless it was taken off when it was first purchased.

Cool what is it?

Sort of the same effect on a saw if done right. I have seen 20%-23% gains just doing a muffler mod on 290-390 saws. Those are the worst restricted with best gains.

That's optimistic right there, but I just do it to annoy my bitchin' neighbors.

Man- those 12-24's hex are the hardest screws to find unless you want to buy a crap load. I see Fastenal has them on their site and really hope the local branch has them in stock.
