Had a few minutes tonight and started doing the fuel lines on the 3400 for my dad.

Call me stupid but where does the cut end on the vent line go? I couldn't find it in the repair manual.

OK stupid  , but that line gets cut off to about 2/3 it's current length and then stuffed down into the slot where the top right starter cover screw goes.

Tuck it under the switch wire and then towards the left side, so it won't interfere with installing that long starter cover screw.

Stick it between the fuel tank and case. Near the kill wire. It only need to be 1"-2" long

Then I'd need to open hi rev to compensate for the lean condition correct? Other then opening your hi jet and closing to clean rev. Is there any other way to test lean/rich conditions?
Usually you open the Hi needle. To be honest I haven't seen much diff. So long as it 4strokes out of the cut your good. That's the best way to test for lean/rich condition

It just gets tucked back under the switch area, at the back of the case. It is open to the atmosphere, but pretty well protected there. :) Can kinda see where it goes in this pic. Just want it so you can get the long recoil cover screw back in place.

After doing a muffler mod, I have never seen a big swing needed in the carb adjustment.
Ideally what you want to end up with, is when you put the saw in wood, it is slightly rich, then when under load from cutting it will smooth out. Not always the easiest thing to hear, but when ya find it, you will know it. ;)

Gregg,

Here is a video that you can kinda hear what I'm talking about. This is a 4200, but its the same with all of them. Its just easier to hear because of the exhaust note these bigger Poulans make. ;) When you apply some pressure in the cut, it smooths out. When ya back off a little, they change pitch, and make that "rich" burbling sound.

Yea, my chain could use a sharpening, had been awhile, I took all seven of these trees down with it, since it was sharp.

Gregg,

Gregg,
Are you running the Poulan brand of clear fuel line on that saw?
I'm looking for fuel line options, as the yellow Tygon F-4040 gets hard in two years
anymore, and is hardly worth the work to replace to keep using it.

LOL, I just knew someone was gonna ask about the clear fuel line. I was trying to remember where I got that. I do believe I had ordered it from Poulan. I normally just use the yellow Tygon. I only had enough to do 1 or 2 saws as I recall. It seems stiffer than Tygon. Don't Know why I tried it, and I havn't checked to see how well its holding up.

I know Mark switched all his saws over to a newer Oregon version of the Tygon line, that is made to tolerate a higher % of ethanol. I guess it stays softer longer.

Gregg,

Thanks for the replies on the vent line everyone, I'll get back at it tonight and fire it up and see how it runs.

Picked up another black craftsman 3.4 tonight, Canadian model with chain brake. $50. Runner started second pull (after backing off choke) with the fuel already in it.

Pulled muffler. P/c look nice and clean, but verified it is indeed thick ring 46mm bore, a true 3400.

Well I gotta say I'm pretty happy tonight. Finished the fuel lines on the 3400 for Dad and and out fresh mix in. Fired right up after a full pulls and a little tuning and it runs great!
Also spent some time removing what I could of the yellow spray paint. The thing that worked best was a putty knife to scrape the old yellow off the green under neath.
So here is what I was working with before when I picked it up.

Needed new fuel lines and duck bill, a couple top cover screws, a muffler bolt, a chain tensioner screw and it had a bad 18" bar and chain that I swapped for a good 20" set up. And a good cleaning overall.
Here's the finished product I have $50 invested in. A good running saw that looks decent that I can surprise Dad with.
I think he'll be happy:)

Good job. Saw came out real nice

Did some 3400 saws come with the 4000 style muffler? I have one that is a late model with one.

I'm wanting to say NO, BUT...we all know by now , not to say never when dealing with these Poulan saws. Seems your apt to see just about anything, especially at or near the end of production of a line of saws. Whatever parts they had on hand or a good supply of might have been utilized.

Gregg,

I'm wondering how far people would drive for a GTG and how much it would take to set one up. I know a place, near Somerset, PA that would work out real nice.

There's some PA folks setting up a GTG on the chainsaw forum. I think it's in May. I'm planning on going to get some free lessons in sharpening, bucking, etc.
