Nice gang of saws Nate!! Real nice! Don't worry about the orange one..I have one orange non-Poulan saw also. 385 xp, guess its my link to the present, and that I don't totally live in the past. ;)

Gregg,

Just got done watching some of your Youtube videos Gregg, good stuff! What did you do to that 4000 muffler with the holes on the front?

The caged needle bearings on the crank have quite a bit of radial play as new so don't get freaked about that. I replaced the set in my 1st 3400 and the radial play on the new ones is around .005"

There are thrust washers on the crank between the bearings and the counter weights on the crank. The position of the bearings set the lateral play on the crankshaft. I never could find out what the spec was but I would think .008 to .012" would be more than acceptable. I've seen them with lateral play of .015" and they worked fine. They may seem a bit sloppy but they're durable as heck and just keep cranking along.
They did make a case gasket at one time but everyone I know of just uses Motoseal or equivalent even if there used to be a gasket in there. It worked well for me on the ones I've split.

I found squish is around .040" so most leave the cylinder base gasket out as well.

Compression on those is typically 120 - 130 psi.

lol, If its that 4000 I put together for a friend, out of spare parts. It was a muffler I had laying around that was one of my early attempts at modding. (butchering) I did the normal stuff inside, but just drilled some holes in the front. It works just fine, but is way to LOUD! I since have went to cutting a slit in the right side, and bending it out and open, similar to what a standard 4000 muffler would be like. I have found that to be the quickest, simplest way to do them.

Gregg,

Lol, yeah that's how I do mine is the slit in the side. Works great and is easy!

So thinking of picking up this 360, it's outta town but really cheap. It ran last year and my only hesitation is it sat out all last winter on a porch, not sure if covered or not, and now apparently the starter is stuck. Which I'm assuming means the piston is stuck, rust maybe? Outside looks great though, thoughts?

I'd guess just the starter itself is jammed up. If it has water in the cylinder and froze that way, it's nothing more than a shelf queen at that point.
Too bad, clean looking saw too.

It looks great on the exterior. If you can get it cheap..why not. I bought one a number of years ago, got it cleaned up and running. It actually ran pretty good. Unfortunately, I havn't touched it since. :dizzy: for whatever reason, I never took a shine to it, or the 306 that replaced it. If ya want want to round out a collection Poulan saws you almost have to have one. But, I can all most say with certainty that of all the Poulans you have, it will not see much action cutting wood. :D But a nice one to have nun the less.

Gregg,

Well I can get it for less than I spend on beer in a week, so........might be fun to have in the garage to look at at least haha!

You must not be buying Canadian beer then. It could cost you a small fortune up here depending on the size of the weeks supply and all:envy:.

A few years back when I was at the Omak stampede I went into the Walmart for some goodies. Socks, a pair of runners and a 24 pack of something. It came to $25 or something ridiculous. The same shoes up here in Walmart with tax would have been close to that alone. Free beer and socks with the shoes is how I figured it.:dancing:

Nothing like a saw for some pocket change.

Never been to the Omak stampede but heard it's a good time!

My guess is also probably just the recoil is stuck. Of course that depends on just how exposed it was.

I had a 361, re-badged as a Wright 136 IIRC, never messed with it much, ended up selling a couple of external parts, then sold what remained to someone needing the P&C. They were ASers, not sure if they're still around. I think that I wound up keeping the b&c (important to me because I don't have a large stash of spare bars), and maybe a $5.00 profit .
