Thanks for the that, Gregg said before around 150 so I figured 140 was pretty good.

Obviously tightening up that jug helped out. Thanks for the that, Gregg said before around 150 so I figured 140 was pretty good.

What I get for not checking it out.. then again, I had it in my possession for less than a week!
Does your crankshaft have more than the usual end play? It's possible the piston rubbed on the crankcase, you can adjust the play/center the crankshaft by tapping in the main bearings.Yeah it helped a lot, I was just concerned about the one spot on the back of the piston on the bottom left of the piston that has that mark on it that you can feel with your fingernail. The dark spot that is long and rectangular, it's higher than the rest of the piston.

And here's one I'm grabbing. Not listed anywhere so don't bother looking. One owner 4900.
Haha, your absolutely right, my bad!!!
On another note Gregg, you said the gap on rings on my 4000 looked a bit wide and may need new rings. I did a compression test finally yesterday and it was at 140. Thoughts?
I have always heard that 125-140 was perfectly acceptable on this series of saws..Yea, 140 lbs. is not bad, not great either!! That piston/rings still gives me the heebie-jeebies. Might be OK, but think I would try replacing the rings. Thats just me Nate. An old fart, worry wart I guess.
If this was the saw that had the loose cyl. bolts. I would ck the bolts/screws that hold the intake manifold to the cyl. also. That is a common place for them to loosen and create problems sometimes, also. And they are much easier to get at right, with the cyl. off the saw.
Gregg,
I have always heard that 125-140 was perfectly acceptable on this series of saws..
Is that wrong?
Yes saw that had loose cylinder bolts. It makes me nervous too and I'd love to replace the rings but they are nla aren't they? None on ebay.
Yes Nate, they are NLA as far as I know. Unless ya find the odd set on ebay or somewhere. I know some guys have found them. I don't have any. Was always gonna grab a set when I had the chance, just in case. Never did. Maybe the red barn guy will be adding them to his lineup in the future. I see they been adding pistons & rings for these older Poulans recently.

I started out tonight with this...View attachment 461903
About a hour and a few Miller High Life's later, I ended up with this... View attachment 461904
Is that a 4000? That piston looks bad, I would be afraid to use it. It looks like it was rubbing on something as well as been ingesting some debris.
Lets see a picture of the jug where that part of the piston run on.
Nice one Mark! I sure wish they had made a 70cc version of that saw!
I got three Miller High Life's left in the fridge. If I drank them...all I would end up with is a trip to the bath room.
