Obviously tightening up that jug helped out.
What I get for not checking it out.. then again, I had it in my possession for less than a week!

Yeah it helped a lot, I was just concerned about the one spot on the back of the piston on the bottom left of the piston that has that mark on it that you can feel with your fingernail. The dark spot that is long and rectangular, it's higher than the rest of the piston.

Does your crankshaft have more than the usual end play? It's possible the piston rubbed on the crankcase, you can adjust the play/center the crankshaft by tapping in the main bearings.

I'll have to check that, I'm not sure. Thanks.

And here's one I'm grabbing. Not listed anywhere so don't bother looking. One owner 4900.

Super nice. Full wrap too! That is a very good find.

Haha, your absolutely right, my bad!!!

On another note Gregg, you said the gap on rings on my 4000 looked a bit wide and may need new rings. I did a compression test finally yesterday and it was at 140. Thoughts?

Yea, 140 lbs. is not bad, not great either!! That piston/rings still gives me the heebie-jeebies. Might be OK, but think I would try replacing the rings. Thats just me Nate. An old fart, worry wart I guess.

If this was the saw that had the loose cyl. bolts. I would ck the bolts/screws that hold the intake manifold to the cyl. also. That is a common place for them to loosen and create problems sometimes, also. And they are much easier to get at right, with the cyl. off the saw.

Gregg,

Gregg,
I have always heard that 125-140 was perfectly acceptable on this series of saws..
Is that wrong?

Yes saw that had loose cylinder bolts. It makes me nervous too and I'd love to replace the rings but they are nla aren't they? None on ebay.

For a 3400 that would be great numbers. The 3700 in my experience is usually close to the 4000. But most 4000's, for whatever reason, are almost always right at 150. I can't really tell you why? They are all put together the same way. lol Take someone way above my Poulan tech level to explain it. Maybe ModifiedMark or that sneaky smart fellow from Kentucky. Mike the Moparman can splain it. I know he has the stoutest 4000 I have ever run, hidden amongst the rest of his "old junks" :guitar:

Yes Nate, they are NLA as far as I know. Unless ya find the odd set on ebay or somewhere. I know some guys have found them. I don't have any. Was always gonna grab a set when I had the chance, just in case. Never did. :cry:Maybe the red barn guy will be adding them to his lineup in the future. I see they been adding pistons & rings for these older Poulans recently.

Gregg,

I'll keep my eyes open, thanks Gregg!

You can cut down many rings to make 4000 rings. I had a few sets but sold them accept two that I kept for my saws. 7700 for one. Of I remember 540 Homelite as well.

Is that a 4000? That piston looks bad, I would be afraid to use it. It looks like it was rubbing on something as well as been ingesting some debris.

Lets see a picture of the jug where that part of the piston run on.

Yes 4000, here is the pic of the jug on that side. Smooth everywhere.
Seems to be a bit of side to side play in the crank.

Nice one Mark! I sure wish they had made a 70cc version of that saw!

I got three Miller High Life's left in the fridge. If I drank them...all I would end up with is a trip to the bath room. ;)

Gregg,

Never mind the dorky spike on that saw, I was going to cut it down but I think I'll get another Husky 268 style spikes set and fix em up for this one like I did my 365.

If I only had 3 Miller High Lifes left and I drank them all, I would probably just end up stopping the truck to relive myself in the ditch on the way to the liquor store to get more beer!
