Got another bow saw

Got another 3400 bow saw in the mail today. I had bought it last week outside Pensacola, FL and expected it to arrive Wednesday so i could show it off with the 5200. Mail must have been slow and despite the lack of packing, it arrived no worse for wear. I think a little paper or bubble wrap would have been in order...

The saw looks good and after getting it primed up I got it to run. It is clean inside and should be a good runner.

You can see the differences in the choke knob and handguard with the other 3400 on the right.

Decided on a Poulan bow saw group portrait. The 5200 is out front followed by the 3400's and the 405 Pro.

Look at the picture just posted of that 5200 bowsaw and you will see the nut in the center of the cover that holds that cover on.

Its a special nut that is kinda flanged on the bottom and is held in place with a retaining ring.

Hey Mark my 5200 does not have that type of top cover it's got three screw holes in the case to hold it down. What you reckon.

Interesting that the green cover has one top nut and the black as three side screws. Also I believe the green has no decals on it.
Bob

Bob, from what I have learned, that cover on Steves saw is called the optional cover because it came with the optional hand guard and it seems it was only that way on later black top models.

You will see if you look that the center cover nut would be in the way of mounting the handguard so they went with the 3 screws to hold that cover on.

I have a black top without the handguard and it has the center hold down.

Mine actully has the center hold down nut but the case was tapped for the 3 screws because the threads on the top of the cyl wallered out and wouldnt hold the center hold down stud anymore.

John, that 2000 looks like new.

Thanks, Mark. It's a keeper for sure. Did'nt want to run when I got it, it had a wood chip stuck under the reed. (Runs great now) Had to get a pic of it on here because of the no picture it did'nt happen thing LOL.

Hmm, Like I posted before to Bob, looks like you got a optional cover that was supposed to have a hand guard.

Let me check this weekend, I may have a handguard from a different model that I can make work on on and I think it will cover up the top hole that way and all the covers had the 3 holes in them for the screws, just the top nut cover used locating pins in the case that went through those 3 holes.

Wood chip under the reed, yeah that happens, you better check the air filter on it and make sure its good.

Nope some moron drilled a hole in the carb cover so they could adjust it (WAY OUT OF WACK). If you look at the picture real close you can see the foam piece that I stuffed in the hole for now. All my other carb covers for these saws are green and I think the black match's better even with the foam in it.

I probably have a black cover here. Remind me to look for it.

Not the first time that I have seen a saw after some moron had it. I had a 2300AV like that here once.

My 4200 has the white hand guard with green top and a center hold down. It may have been added after the fact. Who knows. I should have filled the two handguard holes prior to painting but I forgot!
