no kidding?

Engineers are lothe to add unneeded parts. If it originally had a woodruff key you can bet it still needs it. The bean counters you know.

That is not a self locking taper on the flywheel fit.

i thought if it had that taper it locked its self down oh well i will see if i cant pull one off an old saw or order one .... i may read some more threads on it see if anyone else has had one not lock down ... cause its about as tight as it can be!!!

May be worth a trip to your local Ace hardware or Lowes and look in the little yellow compartment boxes in the fastener department for a woodruff key. The Ace near me has a ton of bits and pieces.

A self locking taper is much shallower angle as in one inch on diameter per foot of length.

I know for a fact that my Stihl 041 needs the nut torqued to keep the flywheel in place. The woodruff key is aluminum and is only to align the slots, not to keep the flywheel stationary. Now how this application applies to other saws, I couldn't say.

I wouldn't put any of 'em together with the nut finger tight.

An aluminum key may not have as much shear strength as steel but it is still quite a bit.

2150's have a cast in place key in the flywheel for alignment. I sheared one just using the pull rope. Forgot to tighten the nut. Senior moment.

That this is a Poulan 361.

Nothing left on the rewind cover. The mfgr's. tag only has a serial(?) number, 188860.

I got it in a trade and am just about ready to try it in some wood.

I'm no expert on them, but if I had to guess, I would say 361. Looks exactly like mine. Mine says 361 on the metal tag, along with Ser. #272886

I saw a 400 awhile back. They look the same, but had more black on it. I suppose the only true way to find out, is measure the bore??

Gregg,

Gregg,

Here is a video of mine running. With a good sharp chain, I think they would cut pretty decent. <embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf" flashvars="file=http%3A%2F%2Fvid48.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff201%2FGregg500%2F100_0411.mp4">

It looks like the 361 but if it is I would say that the muffler has been changed. My 401 had the round gas cap like your 203 Gregg. Also my 401 was lighter green like the earlier 306's and had more black on them like Gregg said above while my 361's were the color pictured above But Greggs in the video above looks to be the lighter green. But then again what the heck do I know?

No. I mean tight, as in torque wrench tight. Not finger or even wrench tight.

i did

i did i torked it to 20 pounds as i was worried about it it says to only tork them from 13 to 15 pounds i normally just wrench it down tight but since it did not i checked it with the tork wrench it came out at about 20 lbs figured that was good?

love it!

Good catch on the muffler but I can't say for certain that its not original. My 401 had that same muffler so it was in use before the 361, but then again most 361's did have the cast muffler on the.

That said the 400, 400A and 401 all did have black covers etc on them.

I would say I'm 90% certain that it is a 361, there just alot more common
