These are the differences if I remember correctly between the 8500 and 5200. The crank is different, crankcase, and reed valve housing/intake. The crankcase if different to receive the plastic cover and intake assembly. Crank shaft is a different diameter on the pto side. I never tried to swap fuel tanks, but I feel they should swap out.

The crank diameter on the pto is different, but as long as you have the right clutch and pump they may interchange. The reed housing looks the same, but I haven't yet checked to see if the blocks will interchange. Nik has a 8500 and I have a 4200 and we're going to see what's what as we restore both saws.:)

Any idea why they use different pistons? Same cylinder.

the pin bore on the 8500 piston is closer to the crown. There must be either deck height differences or the crank bore is moved up in the case. I credit Mark for this theory but have not had an oppotunity to verify yet.

Thanks, Nik. Meant to check this myself, but every time my brain travels across the threshhold going out that thought seems to turn to vapor.

John told you in the other thread that he started that its probably a Dayton.

It could be a 3400 or a 3700.

Here is my Dayton just so you can see for yourself.

Only picture I could find of my 3400 Wizard.

Hey Guys!!!

Y'all won't NEVER guess what I found while cruising eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-Bay!!!
Just when I don't have any easily assessable funds in my saw account!!!:cry::cry::cry::cry:

While you guys were looking at that one, I looked at his other items and hit the $40 BIN on the running Allis Chalmers saw....

Small poulan top handle?

I have a chance to buy an old small top handle poulan chainsaw. I think it is a s25 something. I didn't want to try to start it too much because of a weird situation, but it seemed to have good compression the couple times i pulled the rope. I need a top handle saw and have been trying to get an 015L off ebay for sometime and just can't seem to get it done. What would be the most I should pay for it? I did look it over enough to notice it is complete. Every piece that is supposed to be there is there.

Starter spring repair

Went to work on this one today as the starter rope was hanging out.

when i got the cover ogg there was NO sping in there AT ALL !!
I dont carry spare srings,,but the engagement gear on the pulley looked familiar .. so i stood there thinking scratching both ends at the same time i remembered a LOT of springs have a little loop on the end that catches, you will see it in the pic..
the other needed end looked like none i have seen, will have to make do..
after more scratching my head and my butti got to thinking some more,,well,,gotta pull out so much rope, spring has to be so big,etc..
measured the pulley and found the same size as on a homie xl12.so the spring should be the same size ??
pulled one apart and :) ..
of course the end that catches in the starter housing is completelly different but cutting it off with the dremel wheel i re-bent it..
using a piece of what i cut off and a propane torch i bent it untill it fit nice.. using that as a template i heated and bent the end of the spring to match..letting it cool slowly to keep integrity i wound it up..
this is how i do it.

here is a pic of it installed and you can see the end i re-bent to fit..
what happens a lot is the catch end at the center gets to close to slide the pulley on..you can see that the small catch loop in the spring is to close to the shaft.. i take a small scrap of tie wrap and heat it and bend a tab on the end to pull on the spring a bit to get clearance needed to slide the pulley down on.once the gear on the pulley catches pull the tie wrap out and finish pushing down and seat the pulley..looks like this..

Guess i need to add on ??

the end result was this,..

Ron, its not surprising that the XL-12 spring was close, they share the same spring as a 306/245. The loop is a little different then the 4200's but some of the later 5200 etc used a cover with two differnt studs for springs and a 245 spring will work in them.

Nice job on making do!

Those are great sounding saws, one of the best to me.

Go put it in some wood, you will be impressed.

Nice job Ron. Like Mark said, that saw sounds great.
I got a big day thursday. I got a call from an old timer who lives a few towns over. He said hes got over 50 saws for sale and a lot of other older power equipment for sale. The best part. Most of the saws are GREEEEEEN..and not plastic fantastic either. Ill have updates Thursday night.

I'll be waiting for updates Thursday night......along with everybody else here I'm sure. Don't forget to include the 'non green' saws in the update as well...

What the heck? You made me look all over ebay and I cannot find one that sold for $40!

Too bad I did look though as a Allis Chalmers 295 just sold recently for a fair price. It was missing the Power sharp cover and I just happen to have a nice one for it!
