361 Recoil Starter.

Found a recoil spring on Chainsawr. Have yet to pull the trigger as what I really, really need is the "Large Starter Disc #4264". It takes up the excessive endplay and prevents the loop on the spring from slipping off its' anchor knob.

Will the plastic disc from a 306A fit? I see one listed there but no part number.

May cut up a coffee can lid yet.:msp_rolleyes:

I'm not sure if the 306 disc will fit or not, I cant find any for them either. :hmm3grin2orange:

Those things for lots of these old saws have been NLA for along time. I wish I could even find that material in sheets to cut out new ones but I'm not even sure what there made of.

I need a gas tank/Handle for a 5200 if you have a extra. What part of the intake to you need? The whole thing with the reeds and all?

I may have a carb thats rebuildable.

The one I have is a 4900 I think. i was told the wrong saw and measured the piston and I think its a 4900. Dont know if its the same?

Well boys, after an eternity I finally got off my lazy ass and got another 4000 together. By pics alone it doesn't look much different then most 4000's but there are subtle differnces and this one's a screamer. It's been ported, muffler modded and had the cylinder turned down. All of that isn't really what makes it special to me. What makes this special is how many people, in one way or another contributed to it. Andre helped me assemble it and rebuild I don't know how many carbs before we finally got one that was right. Brad ported it, Mark gave me the quadruple "M" muffler (Modified Mark Muffler Mod.) Appearance wise, Steve, Tim and my brother Marko were all involved in one way or another in getting me the chainbrake. Gregg was kind enought to supply the decals. One of the things that I really like is the bar. It's a Windsor Speed Tip that I stripped, polished (helps when your boss used to have a polishing shop in the basement of your machine shop) and sent out to be black oxided. So, thank you Andre, Brad, Gregg, Mark, Marko, Steve and Tim!
I'll get a video of it as soon as I sink it inot some wood. For now though Gentlemen, I present you with the Poulan Group Hot Rod CV4000

Great job Nik, I hope to have it's yellow PP twin running shortly.

Bob,

Thanks for the help, anyway... maybe someone else might have a drum... :dunno:

NIK!!!! that saw is MINT! is that a factory chainbrake?? I have a 3700 with a different brake setup... not solid bar metal... it's aluminum..

J

that is the factory brake. I'd love to see a pic of the aluminum one.

Which poulan 3400-4000 model had a black rear handle? I got a bunch of these saws and am trying to piece together a few and was wondering which one this could be? Some had the recoil or clutch cover on them with the model # but some were missing. Also is there a way to tell the models apart? All I found on these were serial #'s by the hand guard on the top plastic cover. Thanks

Oh, and does anyone have an intake and carb for a 8500 or 5200? I have some extra parts for these saws and may be able to trade something for it.

Your apt to find different Poulan saws with black handles. The grey Craftsman versions had em, like the 3800. The yellow Poulan Pro versions of the 3700 & 4000 had them also. And, even some of the green Poulan 4000's had them also. There were different style decals on them also. I think they just changed things up every 3 years or so, to at least look like they were updated. Whether they were or not. Same saw, just different color & decal combos. Here is a couple black handle models, 375 & 4000.

Gregg,

Nice saws!

Hmmmm.....
You just opened up a whole new can of worms. I guess I need to do some measuring to find out what it is. It had a 3400 recoil on it but, I dont know if that means alot. It has low comp anyways so I might just pull the jug and inspect what it needs.

Also were the poulans know to have sloppy cranks? Most of the saws I got, you can move the crank back and forth. The bearings feel tight but, the cranks move?

I waited over a month for this thing to make it here. It is still filthy, I knocked off the big junks, but I doubt that it has ever been cleaned. The carb and air filter look rather unmolested. P&C don't look bad looking through the exhaust, the rings are probably stuck. To my amazement it has real good spark. I did not try to start it. I want to pull the piston and clean up the ring grooves first. :hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange:

Very cool cast aluminum muffler.

My 306A has a muffler identical to that one on it.

That's fine as frog hair right there Nik. Nice job everyone.

That black oxided bar needs to be hanging on a nail while you're ripping through some wood with a beater bar on that saw.
Only thing I can see you need is some black satin ceramic on the muffin...;)

Nice saws!

Yea, some do move in and out and that's fine. Its the radial movement we don't want.

Seems like a lot of money for that saw, but somebody and some one else thought it was worth it. I think most if not all 3400's had black handles, and that hand guard looks Poulanish. Its dangerous to say anything absolute about Poulans, other than the older ones outperform most of the competitors.

Most of the 3400s I've seen have green handles and the handguard was attatched to the top handle. They really mixed and matched parts one these models.

I just picked up a 3400 this week with a green handle and the hand guard mounted to the top handle, like Kev described.

Mine isn't firing, owner says it's the coil. Needs rings in it. Dude had a home brew air filter all up on it. Cylinder looks great. Has a Pro Lite bar on it :msp_wink:

Are these things worth slapping rings in and finding a coil for?

ronco, that's a nice looking saw. I'll say $65...:msp_biggrin:
