I finally got to use the saw and it did not disappoint! My cousins neighbor had a big maple fall from the hurricaine and his 290 just wasnt getting it done. Before we cut he stopped by to pickup his S25DA and 290, both got new chains. He asked if I had and bigger Poulans for sale. So long story short I gave him back that mint 3700 he gave me 2 years ago. I felt good, and once he made a few cuts he was happy as could be. "Wow this saw has some guts huh?" Hes getting a new 20" B/C tomm, he cut with the lousy safety chain, wait till he cuts with the good stuff!

I'm not a 290 fan by any means Joe but I've seen them cut much bigger wood than that little thing. What was the the problem with the 290 that it was'nt getting it done?

BTW good on you for giving him the saw back!

Nothing. He cut with it fine withe the new sharp chains. he wanted a bigger saw, something more rugged for the bigger wood we get. He used this saw just cause I brought it and he wanted to try it out.

I got my 4900 back together, pretty mean saw, heavy and torquey as hell....

Welcome aboard...you're starting with one of the better saws. I have one and it cuts well also, helped that I put a new chain on it.

You could be comparing your 73cc saw to a 56cc saw ?

That is true, but when they saw me break out that old beast they figured it was weak, (mainly young guys thinking the new saws were the best thing around). Showed them how an old saw can still handle a lot of work. The Poulan origionally belonged to my father, he handed over to me a few years ago. Wouldn't trade it for anything else. Don't get me wrong, i like a Stihl and am not gonna bash anything, just stating how well mine has held up.

Thanks for the welcomes' guys.

I have one and have had many other 245's. I like alot of the older poulans but the 245 is my favorite!

Welcome to the club...so to speak.and to one that has seen the light!:D Most all of my saws are old Poulans. The 245A would have to rank in my top three favorites without a doubt. The 4000, 5200, & 245A being them top 3.
Here is an old video of mine with a 24" bar. Most here have seen it, but what the heck. I never tire of seeing or hearing old Poulans .;)
