I just got my new used P and C in the mail for my 306A from ebay, they look clean and shiny. Cant wait to rebuild the saw tomorrow, maybe tonight. how much beer does it take to replace a piston and cylinder on one of those things
Nick.

Not many!

How do I get started? The gas tank/handle assembly looks like it needs to come off. Any other tricks to getting the saw apart?

Man, woodchuck, your crystal ball / fortune telling sucks!

rofl!

Me and Nik had a chance to run his ported 4000 for the first time, and I must say it has serous grunt for an old 60cc saw.

Here is a short video of the saw cutting some nasty hard Hickory.

Great job on the 4000 Nik:rock: I generally take two, sometimes three saws with me when out cutting wood. One of them is ALWAYS a 4000! :msp_biggrin:

Gregg,

A 71A...just don't tell the wife!

The 71A is great old mean saw! :D Not the fastest saw on earth, but it don't lack for power, at all!!! For some reason this saw and Nik seem were made for each other. LOL That is ModifiedMark's 71A by the way. One other thing, you might want to make sure you have your hearing protection on while operating one of these! My ears still hurt.;)

It's good to see the old girl back in wood again:clap:

I just got it apart and broke a snap ring. The P/ was shot and the C was not good. the rings were stuck and gouges all over the place. The new one looks good, I just found a deal and pounced. I have to wait till tomorrow but I will clean it up and post some pics after it is running good.

thanks for the vote of confidence, your comment challenged me. I got the saw apart in an hour and two beers, but, I broke a snap ring that goes to the wrist pin (small aren't they) have to wait till tomorrow when the parts store opens.
Nick

nah Nick - it just read funny! You asking how many beers it will take, the response of 'not many', and an immediate follow up with "How do I get started"... oh man, I'm still chuckling.

C I told ya not many... gotta have FAITH MAN!:D

Also while I am online, and there are people here, what is up with the bar and chain I got? It is an oregon I got at a hardware store. It says it will fit the 306A as well as mac homelite other poulans and more. It keeps loosening up on me, now, the holes for the guide bar bolts are egg shaped vertically and the bar adjustment pin is just small and round. Is this the wrong bar, and if so, what do I need. I already know the bar and chain I need is 3/8 and 16" to 24'

Gregg,

Most of the saws I have acquired lately don't require you to pull the muffler to check the piston.

I'm blessed/cursed with an inner ear bone conductivity issue. Loud noises don't bother me much...mostly because I can't hear them.

For some reason, that saw looks smaller than I expected it to...

Does anyone know the max RPM range for the dayton 2z463(poulan 245a) and any mods to do the saw to increase the cutting speed?

Keep in mind this is an old saw and will not obtain the rpms of newer saws. It also has, I believe, a governed carb so you cannot use a tach to get optimum rpms. If the carb is adjusted properly(usually this is about 1 1/4 open on the HI needle) it will 4 stroke when not cutting and will clear up when you cut. These are great saw and light for their size.

The 306A will accept an Oregon MOunt D176 bar. This should be stamped on the bar as well as the length. Check your adjusting screw and be sure its not sliding inside the clutch cover.

Well, does anyone want this stickied? I got lots of credits to piss away. Question is, do you want to go to the sticky sub forum to get here every time you need to?

A good sharp chain should do. If you want more R's, the carb rev limiter can be blocked off.

Probably not a question with an easy answer, and different for different saws, but are these things limited because of limitations on the integrity of the rotating assembly, or to keep them on a sweet spot on the power curve?

I've read that the 71A is limited at 6000 rpm...I wouldn't want to increase that by much, but I was wondering how much wiggle room there was.
