Wife officially believes i'm crazy, lol.

She was home today when my order of (of course) used spares for the 245A i have (and 306 that's coming) arrived. She called and asked "Why did you have a box of used s*** delivered?". Just couldn't get her to understand.

Does it get better or worse as it goes?

heres my $15 special:rock:
hadn't ran in 10 or more years. threw a new fuel line, filter and carb kit into it. runs weely weely good:msp_thumbup:
the blue bar makes it faster:biggrin:
so does the homelite case:)

Great deal on the saw and a great idea on the Homlite case.

I got to get me a couple of those Homelite cases, that way I could leave a saw in them in the back of the truck and not worry about having my saw stolen that way.

Sound advice from Mark IMO. Also, I don't think you'll find it getting "better."

i've not found it getting any better. maybe worse. one thing for sure. the more she b!tches the deeper i dig in. stupid, i know, but a guys gotta have some fun. if it wasn't for the constant grousing i might have been delivered from this addiction. prolly never know though.

It gets worse for quite awhile, then she realizes it [you] are hopeless, and it gets better. But only slightly and only sometimes. Timing is everything. The funny thing is I get as much grief over bringing home another saw as I do dragging home another old car.

Carl, From the sound of it, your dads saw must be a S25 or a Micro version. Others have given great advice! First ck the piston/cylinder condition. If all looks good there, then replace all fuel lines & filter. And rebuild the carb. I see your in Conn. To bad your not a little closer to Joe25DA.:) in Mass. He is pretty much The expert on refurbing those old 25's.

Probably looks like one of these, or a Micro version of them.

Gregg,

Maybe it's more like this one, the Micro XXV.

Grampaw cuts!

I just...couldn't...stand it. I had to take that shiny 245A out and give it a whirl. I think it is almost too nice to use except for like get togethers or something, then I thought, dang it, if it was a car I'd go drive it! So, I swapped over the "das boot" 20 inch bar I got yesterday, checked it over one more time, fueled it, let it warm up, checked the oiler again and went "I'm going"!

Tied the dogs except for the ancient old rat dog, she got to go where I am going, and my little white jacquelin russel mutt cutting buddy stayed home cuz she's recuperating from getting her legs run over by a dually (that is one tough doggie, up and walking now, legs still look like raw meat)

Anyway, big saw so all I am mostly doing today is dropping, once on the ground I don't care if the dogs come along. I don't like them with me if I am dropping...found out that is just a bad idea.stuck the one ancient dog in the cargo box while this was going on.

I did (pics should be in order) one big standing dead tulip poplar (first two pics), a double maple, an oak (that was a backwards leaner 180 drop, had to finish the cut with that little husky because of the smaller bar to fit into the notch once the wedge was in) and a sweetgum. Ya, pulled some fiber there..hey, it's firewood..plus it's *sweetgum* it is all "fiber" that sticks to itself.. heheheh

Feel free to critique my cuts, I am still learning a lot about it as I mostly always just cut natural blowdowns and small trees. I know they look raggy.... I was most amazed my first drop, the first cuts with grampaw, with the tulip poplar as it went exactly where I wanted it. It had to go 90 degrees to the right from the pronounced natural lean, I wanted to not damage the baby hackberry that was kissing it, directly the natural lean way, or have it damage or get hung in the larger maple just beyond it, PLUS the dang wind came up gusty and was coming from the drop zone direction. This is also the very first time I have ever used a store bought faelling wedge, I have always used home made just cut on the spot wooden ones....and standing dead from last winter it was chock fulla widdermakers so I was joe paranoid and looking up almost the whole time. Saw ran great, man I got nice piles of chips, but you sure can tell the diff between having anti vibe or not....

Nothing to critique as far as I can tell! You got them on the ground, and your still alive to tell the tale. :)
I know what ya mean about being hesitant to use the 245. I think you have now actually used yours, more than I have mine.:dizzy: Its the only one I have, and just been using it for "fun cutting". Every time I see it sitting there, I think I should take it out and really use it. LOL

I took one Ash tree down today & bucked it up. Was using my Craftsman 3700, till I hit a rock..:msp_angry: So finished it with a 4000. I all ways carry at least 2 saws with me. LOL At least this one landed on the ground. Last week I took 3 Ash trees down, and 2 of them hung up in other trees. Had to pull them down with a tractor.

No pics though. I never seem to think about it when I go out cuttin, and forget the camera. After seeing your pics of the 245 actually being used for work, has inspired me..LOL Think I will just have to take it along next time.

Hey Stub, what you have there is a 38cc chrome bore and unplated piston with dual rings, this is probably the best topend of all the Micros saws. That saw benifits from a bigger carb, a good WA-19 or Tillotson HU-10 help make it scream a bit more. That saw with a 12" or 14" bar and it's super light weight makes an awsome limber.

3.?

an unexpected yard sale find on the way back from getting a blood test. i have a red 3.4 that i put a 3.7 top end on but am unsure where this one falls in the craftsman line. the cylinder looks clean and is aluminum ? the compression as found is 115lbs. hasn't been used in quite awhile. just wondered what size it is as there are no markings other than the serial no.also had one new and one used bar and a bunch of chains in the box too. thanks

Looks like what you have there is a Craftsman 3400.
The number crosses over to a 5300-12066 which is a 3.4 cylinder.

Zogger's post about using his 245, got me wanting to actually use mine for work, not just cookie cutting. So this morning I loaded it and a 4000, as backup, lol, and headed to the woods. Took down a 2ft. Ash with the old 245A and bucked it up. The saw worked and ran flawless! I have a 24" bar on mine. If someone was to take all my saws, and leave me with just the 245, I would get along just fine and be a happy man.:)

Some will say the lack of anti-vibe feature as a draw back. But I really don't think its bad at all. 73.4cc of old school sound filling the woods, was a pleasing sound too. I took a picture of the 245 & 4000 sitting together. Kind looks like the old man showing his teenage son how we used to cut wood back in my day...LOL

Gregg,

When can I pick them up? I can leave a pristine Wild Thing, if you think the 245 may get lonely. Least I could do.:smile2:

Gregg,

Man, I like me some big ash, that's good stuff! Glad you took those old saws out, they need some fun too!

I went and bucked up what I dropped yesterday. Hauled one batch home last night, another this afternoon, still got a lot more to haul back.

Ya, I am getting back used to no antivibe. Been awhile. So your's pulls a 24 well? I saw a used one the other day, it looked close enough to work if I drilled the oiler holes out just a little bit more. The rest matched up good.

Here's a load I got this afternoon with Annie my cutting buddy and the 245A and the 137 Husky. Annie still can't walk that well, you can see the wounds on one of her legs there, so I carried her back and forth in the cargo box. I have maple, sweet gum and some oak in that load. I'm working on my 2013 wood now.
