Starts and runs just fine. Came with two 20 inch bars, three decent loops, an owner's manual (! cool...)and a new starter pulley. Has some oiler issues though, I'll be looking into that, it sorta just leaks out......that and the throttle lock, but it started without it.

Hey everyone. I'm new here, pretty new to the wood cutting world too for that matter. This site has been awesome reading for me and I have learned a lot. Thanks for any input you guys could give me. I didn't want to clog up the forum with a silly question for an even more silly saw. I have a PP4620(I know, it's a homeowner saw, but it works for me for now) and it has treated me well for the year I've owned it. I treat my things very well and I clean it every time I am finished with it. I took the air filter out the other day to clean it and noticed it did filter a lot of (wood)dust out, but some still got past. Is there anything I can do to prevent that? The filter isn't real high quality, like a piece of gauze bandage molded into plastic. Is there a better alternative? The stock filter is Poulan #545057701 if that helps. Would it be possible to use like K&N filter oil on it to keep things cleaner? Again, thanks for any help you guys would be able to offer.

Nick

Hey Nick welcome aboard. I will disagree with you that the PP4620 is a silly saw. A little history, that saw is based off of the Poulan 2750, 2900 and the old PP295 line which happen to be very nice wood cutters, and are very powerful when opened up. Just get yourself a new filter. You've come to the right place, as were all horsepower mongers here. The only thing I don't like about the new 4620s is the AVX tooless adjust clutch cover, however a standard cover will bolt right into place.

What I would do is look for a used muffler for a 2750, or a 2900 on ebay as these are two piece and can be modified, plus they flow better even in stock form. Also you'll need to get a carb adjusting tool so you can dial it in after the muff mod, then let that baby rip.

Heres the muffler I'm talking about.

Hey guys, thanks again for the input. I shouldn't have called it a silly saw. In fact, I love it, it is my first one. It may not be a huge race saw, but I have cut a lot of lumber with it for the fireplace this winter and it has only given me a fit when I watched my father(God love him) try to trench with it cutting up a downed tree. Even then, after swapping chains to keep going, it did awesome. I'm just new to small engines(I'm a serious car guy) and just wanted some opinions about the filter. I didn't want to cause any controversy or serious discussions. I gave it some more thought and I think everyone is correct. I will try the leggings as a first step filter, anything that gets past both stages then will just be wood dust(tiny dust) and I theorize that it will be burned up during combustion. It really isn't enough that I should be worried, I just want this saw to last me a long time. I am thrilled with it, and quite honestly, it impressed my friends that came over for some firewood when one of their brand new Stihl MS391 broke. I absolutely love this saw.

FYI, my father had an old 3400 when I was a kid, and he just replaced it this summer with another Poulan, but I don't know which one he got.

I will look for one of those mufflers. I take it the new ones will not be the same as a used one? How do I mod it? I'm assuming I open up a few more holes in it, but how big, and where? Since I deal with primarily fuel injection working on cars(save for my 66 Mustang), I'm still learning about these little carbs. What adjustments will I need to make? I know the tooless clutch cover isn't well regarded, but I honestly haven't had any issues with it(knock on some freshly cut elm wood) so far and I have always made a habit of just checking chain tension(rarely have to adjust it on used chains) everytime I start to use it or fill it up.

Nick

Edit: I just bought this on ebay. Hope it is what I needed.....http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Pou...aultDomain_0&hash=item3f0f1b570b#ht_500wt_715

Nice job on the 3400. The big brown truck left me a new one today as well in a swap with another member. No Poulan though this time.

Not sure about the oiler leaking, they seem to leak where there bolted to the case alot. I use a little silicone in the one corner where theres not much gasket sealing area.

If your throttle lock is locking but not fast idleing the saw, it means your throttle linkage wire is bent and will have to be rebent to work right.

Hey, man, go snag that old saw before it gets junked!

You'll thank us all later...if you stick around, two weeks, tops....

Already tried. My family doesn't seem to keep broken stuff around.....

Nick

With my family it is an all-or-nothing deal. If I ever say no to some crap they are getting rid of, they won't ask me again to take anything for a while. They aren't being rude, they just want to get rid of stuff. If I am the easiest dumping ground I get it. That includes leftovers from picknics and such, too.

Bet his saw is missing the throttle lock. Or the spring.

Hi again.I finally found the most parts for my 306A.I found the piston-cylinder,the rod with the needles, the crankshaft bearings and the seals. It is allmost ready to start up but i stuck to the ignition coil.I am desperate,i've searched the whole internet,i've asked 10 sellers from ebay,i've send email to several parts shops and guess, absolutely nothing.I've seen that many coils are similar to mine.I was wondering if any of them could fits to my unit.My experience to this stuff is zero.I will be greatful to any help.

I just did one

im tryimg to fix an old poulan countervibe 3400 i need to know where the vent line comming out of the gas tank goes!! where does it hook to and what goes on the end in the tank can someone give me some advice on this thatnk you

I just did one the other day. Of the two holes in the fuel tank, the slightly smaller hole closer to the engine is the fuel line, it fits in that grove, under the carb, then to the inlet.

The vent line, the larger hole, has inside the tank a duckbill, that attaches to a grommet. A few inches of fuel line goes on that. Pull it up and through, reach in and give it a little push with your finger, that grommet seats and fills up the hole and makes it snug with the fuel line. Tuck the vent line-just a couple three inches, up under the carb just anyplace, I stuck mine under the wire going to the start and kill switch and shoved it outta the way enough so that top long case screw would be easy to put in. And that's it.

Sorry I don't have the part numbers handy for the duckbill and vent hole grommet, I got mine right from a shop, they had them in stock. There's a good thread here that modifiedmark did on these saws. In lieu of using the duckbill and grommet OEM stuff for the vent, you can use a slightly oversize bit of fuel line, and two coarse screws in each end of the line to keep it from leaking. Details at the link, a very good post, will get ya going just swell.

They *do* work with the right stuff. I had one of the old versions in a craftsman/poulan electric saw (plug in, worked great sold it, shoulda kept it)) and I have one on my Oregon battery saw. The chains cut just fine, and the self sharpening system *does* work. The chains themselves have a single tooth on the loop, a diamond cutter, that "shapes" the sharpening stone, to keep the correct geometry. It takes down the cutters and rakers at the same time. it just works. It looks rad different from a regular semi chisel, but it works.

Whether or not the new chain will fit your old stone, can't say, but the one I have is for a 14 inch bar, 3/8ths low pro 50 gauge. And I don't know if the new styled and composition stones fit the old mounting brackets either. You could call Oregon to ask. If they don't, you can always get the whole rig (bar chain stone) and use the external sharpening system with the stone holding cassette. (I like the built in one, real handy, you just need to do a good job cleaning out under the cover once in awhile, as the stone will accumulate crud.)

Philbert did a cutting test with two normal (brand new) chains versus the self sharpening chain (used but sharpened for the test), the new powersharp system, and the powersharp chain was actually faster in the cut.
