Yes Greg, after sleeping on it, I have to say I'm leaning the way of the original point ign.

Thats the one thing I don't have new, is a set of points! I have a new condensor.

Mike and I were talking the other day about the invite you threw out before about the Poulan guys coming over to your place and I would like to do that sometime soon as it warms up. I will make sure you get to first hand run a 245A!!! If you have run a 306A, there just like it only stronger. My Dayton version is the freshest one I have and it seems to run like it.

There not a super fast saw by any means but they do well and are light for there age and displacement. No antivibe but they will pull a 24-28" bar all day without complaint.

Bob, I got the ported 3.7 Craftsman put back together yesterday. Done a vac test on it. Held 14" for almost a half hour before I took it off.

Pressure tested it and like you I got a small bubble or two out of the clutch side seal every now and again. I used some NOS seals and they seemed a little stiff. No matter to me if it holds vac. Runs extremely well.

I also remembered that the oiler impluse hole should be blanked off when doing these test! I used a extra oiler cover, gasket and a inner tube gasket and it blocked it off perfect.

Hmmmm. Oiler impulse line?? Have never blocked it off.! I assume you are referring to when oiler is off saw? If so, I can see that necessity.

I'm pretty well set I think, but what do you have? I guess a rim and drum setup for it would be fine and I could use a couple of sprocket brgs.

Maybe a set of points?

i may of found another set of points

in my parts

is the points and condenser a 39004 39005 ?

i think i may have some extra ones
i will do some checking both today and tommorrow to see if i can locate this for you

check this out i have the points in prestolite
http://www.cmsmallengines.net/points-contact-1-2-3.html

its just the condenser i was out of

my inventory on the store says i have 4 of them

i will go and pull this item from the shelf to make sure i still have it

Yes, I want to do the GTG thing also when the weather gets decent.
I'm guessing it won't be till April or May at the earliest. The problem around here is mud and mush around here, with snow, rain, freezing, thawing, till it drys up some.

I never ran a 306 or 245 :dizzy: So looking forward to that! Of all the older Poulans that I don't have, one of the 85cc saws is what I probably hope to get someday. A 4000 & Husky 385xp is what I run the most in my wood cutting endevors these days. So, one of the 85cc Poulans seems like it would fit in there, in an effort to keep it all Poulan in the woods! LOL

Gregg,

Greg, I have a 85cc Poulan in a red Craftsman colors coming this week! It may or maynot be fixable but I'll see when it gets here.

By fixable I mean finding top end parts. If not maybe someone else will need it for parts or I'll just set on it for awhile and see what happens.

Yes those are them. You look to make sure you have them and I'll see if there are anything else I need and will call you tomorrow.

Do you mean the original point ign or the later Poulan electronic ign?

You know they can say what they want but the original point ign seems to put out a spark at a lower rpm and seemed to start eaiser.

I mean the original point/condenser/magneto ignition system that was designed to work together. That is if you can still get parts.

I was trying to start and tune a Craftsman/Poulan 2.5 that I rebuilt with new crank bearings and seals yesterday. It would start and run fast, but I couldn't get it to idle. It either spins the chain at HS or stalls and dies. When I turn up the idle speed screw it races. When I back off the idle speed screw it dies. There is no happy medium.

How can I fix this? Do I need to raise the metering valve a bit?

While I was doing this, this obnoxious drunk comes over to my garage and complains that running my saws is disturbing his hangovers. I told him that what I was doing was none of his business and that I was doing it because I like it.

This obnoxious ******* alcoholic gets drunk every night and sleeps off his hangovers at his girlfriend's house across the street from me. He owns his own house a couple of miles away from my neighborhood. I think that years of excessive alcohol consumption has destroyed his body and fried his brain. His body looks like death warmed over and his mind is not even rational.

Did you rebuild carb? Also sounds like an air leak somewhere. Raising metering lever from its recommended height will likely flood saw. If you know which carb you have go to MIke Acres site and see the correct height for the metering lever. Its under the carb section.

Before I replaced the crank seals and crank bearings, the saw raced at WOT even with the idle speed screw backed all of the way out. The new crank seals hold 5 psi and show no sign of leakage. I'll see what I can find at Acres. I might have messed up the metering lever height and set the metering needle too low when I put in a carb kit. It has a Walbro WT-239 carb.

News Flash! I rechecked my saw and found out why it wouldn't idle. I had the L screw turned all the way in. Its original setting was 3/4 turn. I backed the L out to its original setting of 3/4 turn. I will run the saw again as soon as the weather allows.

It is extremely difficult to troubleshoot and tune a saw while an obnoxious drunk with a bad hangover sneaks up on you in your garage or in your backyard and breathes down your neck. I might just have to open a Can of Whup-Ass or seek a Restraining Order if the discourteous drunk stalker harasses me again.

PP Super 380

Do any of you Poulan guys have some good pictures of a Poulan Pro Super 380? I need a nice close shot of the clutch cover decal. Mine has none at all on it. I don't have a clue what they look like.

I am going to try and make some decals for some of my saws. I been trying to take a close picture of the old decals, even if they are damaged, and then trying to "paint or re-paint" them with some photo editing software, then want to try printing on some decal paper.

I don't know yet if this is gonna work or not. I started playing with the photo software, and got several about done, and they don't look half bad.:dizzy:
I havn't tried printing any yet, I will have to figure out how to get them sized right. Some nice pics of Poulan 4000 decals would be nice too.

If I can make something that looks half decent, will be glad to send ya some.
They may not be perfect, but I'm hoping they will look better than damaged ones, or none at all. Allot of these Poulans, you can't get decals for it seems.

Anyway, it just something I thought I would try and play with this winter, when its no fun being out in the woods. LOL

Gregg,

Greg, good idea you have going there. There is a seller on ebay that sometime has some decals and they have some 3400 decals right now. I believe you know the one I mean.

Not long ago I think they had the 380 decal listed, you might contact them and see if they have another laying around.

When I sent the pictures of my decals to the guy that is reproducing them he requested that I send a couple photos with a small ruler with it showing the size. Maybe that helped him with sizing them somehow.

Mark, That seems to be the biggest hurdle, getting the size right. I have a new set for a 3400 that I was thinking of scanning. That might give me the proper size as a starting point. Havn't tried that yet. Your right, I'm sure there are guys out there that do this profesionally. Just thought I might try it, something cheap! LOL

Was just browsing the bay, and saw the 3400 decals again. They also had a New piston & rings for a 3700. $79.00 Yikes!!
