Poulan S25CVA

Well ,tore apart my new aquisition. Removed P&C cause I saw a lot of carbon buildup in the cylinder exhaust outlet and the top of the piston. I have yet to see ring pins in any of my S25's(6). I did a comp test prior to teardown and it was 130psi. Replaced cylinder using Motoseal and after a tank of mix its now 160psi. I was surprised at the amount of increase. Expected about a 10 psi increase. May ship this to VT. but I have a 346xpNE coming from a member with an unlimted coil and muff mod and figure I'll have it shipped there instead.

did you just clean and reuse the piston and rings or use nos? or do the lil flip the ring trick?

Just so I understand correctly you mean you replaced the base gasket with Motoseal. Also I have s25da coming that I will be tearing down and I have never been into one before so any problems I should look out for before dis-assembly?

I did remove the base gasket and replaced it with Motoseal. I didn't flip the rings which I normal ly do. Guess I didn't want to break one as they are Nla. To remove cylinder you have to break down the saw quite a bit. Also because there are no ring pins make sure ring ends are opposite each other.

Wish I could find new rings. I used the old ones. Didn't flip for fear of breaking one.

S25 rings come up from time to time. Also, a person can get rings from Otto Engine Works or Hastings. That's probably what I'll do with my S25's if I can't get NOS rings when the time comes.

3400 clutch

Will I need to use a piston stop to remove the clutch to get to the sprocket bearing? Or can a person just hand hold the flywheel?

Take the plug out and put some rope in through the plug hole. But make sure the piston is not past the exhaust port.

if you can get the clutch off by just holding on to the flywheel - then that means one of two things (or both)
--the clutch is about to fall off and its a good thing you're working on it
or
--you're a strong mofo and i'd be afraid to shake your hand cause i like my hands just the shape they're in.

--pull the plug, hand turn the flywheel until the piston is almost at TDC, cram a lot of small clean rope in there to hold the piston. That's your stop. Now crank the clutch off clockwise. It's reverse thread, so don't screw that up. It shouldn't take much at all to do this, force wise. You can use like a small piece of clean fuel line, etc, to reach in there and feel the piston going up and down. Easy to find the correct spot. Or if the muffler is off, just when the piston is most of the way up and the exhaust opening is covered.

Flywheel side is regular thread. So on that side adjust the piston coming from the other way up, if you can see what I am saying.

Some guys here use a LOW powered impact wrench, and just leave the spark plug in then, just touch it, clockwise or "backwards" thread on the clutch side to take it off. I haven't done it with an impact, I just use a rope, but have seen it done, it is what most shops do to speed things up.

just remember when taking the clutch off that you will turn it the same direction as engine rotation. that's why when you put it back on, opposite direction as engine rotation, you don't need to worry about getting it super tight cause the rotation of the crank will tend to tighten it up.

Thanks, for the info. Sounds like something is a miss on the clutch side and the previous owner said he thought it was the needle bearings on the clutch sprocket. I guess I'll start there.

won't know til you tear it down. should take about 15 minutes to take it apart. hopefully the bearing is just starting to dry and didn't get a chance to get real hot. i've got one that someone put the wrong sprocket on and it rattles and makes a pinging sound. i don't run it til i've replaced the sprocket assembly. be sure to check the crankshaft out real closely. should be able to come up with a replacement bearing pretty easily and cheaply.

Let me explain, we got alot of good members here that go above and beyond in helping other members with long distance Craigslist deals and such.

Personally I want to send thanks out to Boskaerm for helping a stranger in the US aquire a couple of prize's from europe. What a friend. Then to Kuhndog, Vibes and Saw Dr, who just jumped at the chance to help out by taking time out of there busy days to pick up, box up and ship saws and taking money out of there pockets before I could even get it to them.

I know there is more of this going on all the time and I know everyone appreciates the help in aquiring there C/L treasures, so this thread is dedicated to all the helpers out there.

I'm still waiting for the chance to return the favor but I'm not in the hot bed of prized saws but who knows, I'm sure it will happen sooner or later.

Just wanted to post some open rep to these guys and all the ones helping out.

Thanks but this aint about me, I just wanted to say thanks to the helpers.

I mean I got europen Partners, a Allis Chalmers, and such that I never would have found around here and I appreciated the help in getting them.

Sounds like he's collecting some European saws.
