On the saws... I cut quite bit of firewood. So do both my cousins, my b.i.l. and my neighbor, and I cut with them all at different times. I like to use my poulans when I can. If its bigger wood I always bring my 3.7/20". That saw runs like new and cuts awesome. I also always bring my Dolmar PS540, its 6 years old and the only saw i bought new. Like most of you I have more than 2 saws. A lot more. I have the luxury of have multiples of the same saw:
3.7-3700
4000/PP395
5 S25s from early 70's to late 80s
2 pp335s
3400/3.4
so I can use one once in while if i want and the other, looks good, get fired up and showed off.

Jim, I took my 4900 to the Iowa GTG and had alot of fun watching people running it and return it to me grinning from ear to ear. :msp_biggrin:

It impressed every single one who ran it. It is a awsome runner.

Yours seems to be just as good a runner as well. Coincidence? I would think not.

It was one of my favorite saws of the weekend.

Aaron, if you find that late version 306A IPL let me know will you please? That is one I do not have but I do have a 78 version 245A IPL that shows the later Electronic ign and one screw muffler on it. I'm thinking the later 306A IPL will be dated 78 or later as well.

Will do Mark. Do the '78 dated 245A saws have the un-governed HS carb like this 306A? My late 306A has a muffler unlike any I've seen on these saws. Bigger than what's on my Dayton branded 245SA. Five screws on the cover. Four at the corners plus one in the center. Shaped vaguely like the alluminum ones, but it's steel. Large FRONT outlet. Every steel and alloy 200/300 can I've seen has been side outlet with holes on the cover. This cover is smooth. Dang thing blasts onto the back of the clutch cover. Discolored and carboned up the CC pretty well. Yellowed the paint on the cyl fins a bit too. I'll post pics once my home connection is back up.

I do not have an IPL but I do have a copy of a service manual for Poulan 306,306A,306SA, and I think it list about 4 other saws. It does talk about the electronic ignitions some in it if you are interested let me know.

Thanks a bunch. I'll PM you my email address when I can. PM's are iffy right now on my phone. Posting too...

Joe, I found your first picture of the countervibes real sexy. Can I steal it for a screen saver?

Al.

Just a little more on the old countervibes - then I will shut up. ;)
Gregg, forgive me for the quality of this video. I made it more than a year ago and was so ashamed of it I deleted it. I found it again in the trash so here it is. It is my 4900 before Mark's crank went into it. The carb was dirty and the chain not particularly sharp but you can still see how it wants to cut some of our Aussie hardwood.
This saw is all original and has some nice compression for an antique. Actually the only saws I have with better compression are a pair of Husky 266's. One of them is fairly tendon snapping.

Good looking 4900. I remember ya got the crank from Mark to get it back to running condition.:msp_thumbsup:

Was noticing your 4900 has a safety start button on the handle. Neither one of my saws in that series has one. Was kinda curious what year they started using them on these Poulans. Maybe it was a Govt. safety thing in Aus. at the time, kinda like chain brakes.
By the way AL, I couldn't get your video to play.:msp_sad: I had to switch to YouTube to post videos. I had previously used Photobucket for that. But for the life of me, can't get one to post using that any more.

Gregg,

Gregg, it is probably just as well the video will not play for you - it is really bad. It works for me, I just used the insert video box above, pasted in my Youtube vid URL and it showed up. I am a computer immigrant though - no iphones around in the fifties and sixties when I was growing up. And not such a bad thing either.:msp_wink:

Al.

Edit: Yes, it has Mark's crank and I also have a couple of Poulan Micros floating around with some of Mike's fuel caps on em.

that 3.7 looks good with that husqvarna bar what is it 25"?

got a possible big-inch saw for myself.....

Well fellas......
I got a lead on a saw that is about an hour away. It's a 5200. As is 50 bucks. I bought it sight unseen. He said if he checked compression
and spark, it would be more money. I think I'll take my chances. The owner of the saw shop said it was a one owner saw, and it was a homeowner, not a logger. I guess he's had it for a very long time. I will let you know what I find.

I bought a prostitute 8500 (I think I'll coin that phrase :) ) for my Dad a few years ago. It was stuck. Got it loose, and he has cut his
firewood for 3 seasons now with it. Yes, same rings.
I led my uncle to the Garage Queen 8500 of the East Coast. He paid some money, but it is as close to new as I have ever seen a chainsaw.
Period.

As long as this guy doesn't change his mind, I should have my very own "big saw" soon.

Did anyone use a tank fitting yet?

KJC

A few fittings have been distributed, and I think they will be in use soon. I need to get some time to put one in my 5200 bow saw soon, as I still have not started it yet...

In the middle of some home improvement projects right now that are taking some precedents over other hobbies.

Let us know how your new to you project turns out. You cannot lose at that price. Worth more then that in parts. I'm still glad your uncle that 8500 that I had a lead on. It just didnt feel right for taking a chance on a long distance C/L deal. I'll find one sometime but dont feel the overwhelming urge with 5200's already here.

KJC, I hope that you get the 5200 (with spark & compression!)

that is the way they came from the factory, and they have a very nice sound:hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange:kind of like a big block ford or chevy breathing through dual 3 inch exhaust.

They sound exactly like this.
